My mother is in Highlands Living Center. The thing that stands out in my mind most is the fact that as you walk in, there's a receptionist and security right there, and it's bright and more than acceptably clean. The only problem we had with the staff was that my mother was not comfortable with some of the aides, and they've since been removed. She gets along with quite a few people now, and it's been 11 months, so she's kind of worked her way into it. My mother is very particular about the menu. She's not happy with the food seven days a week there, but to me, it looks like it's served well. That's the only thing that she really has a problem with, and the rooms are not as big as they were in the other place, at least the one that we saw. My one suggestion to them is that they need to have another supervisor on the weekend because the staff seems to be more lax on the weekend as far as helping her, because she is not ambulatory right now, and to get her out of bed and to get her dressed seems to be a little bit of a hassle, especially on the weekends.

My father in law was in this nursing home for several months and fell several times, was left alone to wander into another room, was hospitalized due to bed sores and ulcers that were left untreated. Instead of addressing these horrible things, the Director Sam just wants to cover it up and proudly not take any responsibility or blame for anything going on at this establishment because we spoke up! Please steer clear of this facility and protect your loved one!

It depends on level of care and where live on campus. Highland Living Center is overcrowded and all staff seem unhappy. There are new faces very week or so. I've had both friends and family live there. Mostly they were always filthy, partially shaved, never do their teeth and mostly fingernails filthy. Aids were coarse at times and many were mean. The rooms are OK, but repairs are needed in places. IT's TOO SMALL. Patients are allowed to go in other patients rooms on one of the units and sometimes hit other patients. This place needs a complete overhaul and they need to start treating employees better. Patients are constantly disrespected and basic rights were violated while we were there. A lot of patients were allowed to fall and get hurt there. We were disappointed and do not contact us. We have had enough.

I was very impressed with the Highlands at Pittsford. I first stopped by the front desk first, and then they directed to me her cottage where she lives. The cottages are small houses arranged in a small loop next to the main facility. I was very impressed with the comfortable living accommodations. For meals, residents can either eat in the fine dining restaurant or they can have food brought to their apartment or cottage. We ended up having food delivered to the cottage. Around 8:00 after we had finished eating, the waitstaff came to pick up the dishes and returned them to the kitchen. It was so easy for my friend to go about her normal life. I did not get the impression that she was being taken care of. Instead, she was simply in a situation where she could easily go about her life with the support she needs as she gets older. The facilities were also impressive. Each cottage was a full house (although small, but this is not necessarily a bad thing) in and of itself. In the cottage neighborhood, there was a "Hanamen" club, where events could be held and residents could gather together for social events. In the main building, where the apartments are, residents had similar room dedicated for social events, but it was not as big. All of the support staff was very friendly and service oriented.
