"I went to Connect55+ Independence and met with the manager, Amy. She was just very enjoyable and very friendly. She gave me a walk-through of the one and two-bedroom apartments, but I believe the one-bedroom was already taken. For the price, it is well worth it. They have a gym. It's very independent. If you're in good health and everything, it is a great place to live. I looked at the one-bedrooms and they were pretty spacious. They have a nice closet and liked that they have a separate laundry in the apartments. The kitchens were pretty modern. I was just impressed with the whole thing. It was very clean and very neat. To me, parking is everything. I'm 67 and I'm very active. I come and go, so the parking lot has to be pretty well-lit, and I would feel very safe living there."

"Meeting with the administrator at The Groves was a fantastic experience. She had a lot of knowledge and explained the services that were offered. She also gave me a tour. She was just an incredibly warm and compassionate person who understood everything I was looking for, my description of my brother, and the type of services he is going to need. We were looking for long-term assisted living care. My brother doesn't need a lot of assistance right now, but he does need some, and they have exactly what he needs. They have light housekeeping, meals are provided, some oversight of medication administration, and just plain checking on the residents to make sure they're doing well. It was a very pleasant place, very clean, and overall a comfortable home-like setting. The residents seemed to know each other, and the administrator seemed to know by name everybody we encountered on my visit. It was just truly a home-like atmosphere. I viewed mostly the rooms and the main area there, and I loved it."

"My mom is at Riverbend Heights Health & Rehabilitation Center. The staff does a good job and we had no problem with the move-in process. It's adequate, but it's just outdated. They have outdoor areas like a patio, and some activities such as bingo, arts and crafts, and some others. The monthly rate is expensive for me, but it's probably average for what you would have to pay."

"My friend will move into Excelsior Springs Nursing & Rehab. It's very nice. They have two patients to a room, but the rooms are pretty large. The doors are really, really wide for wheelchairs. They have an activity board, and they have about 3 or 4 activities per day if you want to participate. The hallways are super wide. They have nice TV areas where people can sit in chairs, watch TV and talk. They have a very large kitchen area where people can eat together. They have outside patio, so if you want to sit outside, you can do that. And it's very clean and there are a lot of staff members there. We have no scheduled tour. We just walked into the place and a nurse gave us a tour. She was very nice, very open and she showed us everything. We looked at their dining room and it was very large. They have several people in the kitchen. It was very large and looked really clean. It's large and well-staffed."

"My mother stayed at Valley Manor in Excelsior Springs. The caregivers were wonderful. We lucked out with them. They were very concerned with their residents. They did whatever they could to try and make them active as much as possible, which they really couldn't because it was locked down when my mom was there. They had positive cases in the building. A lot of the people needed to stay in their rooms, so that was more difficult for them, but they were wonderful. The food was good. The facility was older, it wasn't as bells and whistles as the others, but it was nice. Her room was comfortable and very spacious. The staff was very caring."

"The staff at Excelsior Springs Medical Center is extremely caring and very active. The room is quite comfortable, and with the private bath, it meets my mother's needs. Their dining room is well decorated, clean, and welcoming. They do day trips. They take them to Wal-Mart on a bus so they can purchase anything they need. They have musical guests that come in and provide entertainment. They play bingo and lots of games that keeps them engaged. I am very satisfied for my mom. "

"Oak Pointe of Kearney was very nice. The tour was good. They walked me around and showed me different activity areas and different things that they could do, and it was nice. The staff members were good. The room was like a hotel room. They had both studios and one-bedrooms. They had different areas where residents could go to be with other people and watch TV. They also had an outside courtyard area and a dining area. However, there was not a whole lot of activity when I was there. The place was nice. It's better than I thought."

"My mother-in-law moved to Westbrook Care Center. The community is great. It's a caring environment with lots of activities. She has a one-bedroom apartment with a nice, very big bathroom that is very easily accessible. The dining area is wonderful. They do Wii bowling, some painting, and a lot of crafts. They have a little exercise thing, they do puzzles, and mingle amongst the people."

"When my mother-in-law died suddenly of a heart attack my father-in-law fell apart and didn't take care of himself. Within a month my father-in-law was in the hospital and his doctor said that my father-in-law should go to an assisted living facility. I had no experience with assisted living facilities or what to look for. One of the nurses in the hospital said that we should use the sniff test. The less it smells like urine the better. The nurse said I should also look at the bathing schedule and try to talk to the other residents. I took the nurses advice and I checked out several facilities. Many facilities had that insitution/hospital smell to them. I also found out that many of the facilities only give baths three days a week to patients, and frequently these baths were occurring in the middle of the night.When I first went into Blue Hills I could tell that it was different. The place didn't smell of urine and the residents seemed very happy. My father-in-law lived at Blue Hills for nine months and he seemed very happy. My father-in-law died of heart disease at the age of 82. "

"The setup of the place is pretty cool. There are many different rooms and floors and they are open hotel style. However, the place feels very stuffy and sickly. The sterile smell and the general disposition of everyone there was unsettling. Everyone there greatly enjoyed the visits by all of us youngsters so that was nice. Was slightly depressing to go in there, not much cheer and employees there seem to be just doing their jobs nothing more nothing less. The place seemed to have all amenities that would be expected there seemed to be no neglect. "

"The Bristol Manor of Odessa is OK. There's only three staff members, the administrator and two staff people. The administrator said she wants it to be like a homey atmosphere, but they don't have a way to get us somewhere like a van or bus or something that could get us to different places when we are able to go out. Right now, we're all tied down here like we're prisoners instead of people. And I am really over this situation. The food is not very good. There are no activities. You have one room. The only thing you can do in your room is watch TV if you have a TV, lay on your bed, or sit in the recliner, and that's about all the room there is. Then you have a bathroom connected to your room. My son is close by so he didn't want me to go anywhere else."

"My aunt was recently (a week ago) released from Liberty Hospital to Liberty Terrace. I had heard stories about the lack of care but also that they had recently gone under new management. Whatever it was before it has certainly changed for the better. The place was clean, there were Xmas decorations everywhere, and the staff greeted me all the way down the hall. My aunt is mentally challenged and they were so sweet to her, very patient and even moved her to a room closer to the nurses' station so they could keep an eye on her. The food was good and they offered my family and I complimentary dinners. My aunt's caseworkers were up to date on her case, the nursing staff knew what the doctors had ordered for her and even contacted them to modify her meds on a Sunday when they noticed how agitated she was. This was the best nursing home I've ever experienced. "
