"I think Cedarhurst of Jacksonville is a great facility, and my mother is on their waiting list. I had no problems with the staff. I remember the bingo, and they had a bit of a social there. I thought the dining area was fine, the rooms were great, and that's why we chose that facility and put her on the list. She'll be doing the memory care, but we saw a common room on the assisted living end with a library, a fireplace, and a piano room."

"Riverview Estates had community rooms that were very nice and had high ceiling. It's a pretty building and had a lot of light coming into the main rooms, but the rooms themselves where you would be staying were smaller and a little cramped and the low ceilings were not appealing to me. Also, there were only showers available. There was 1 bath available, but it's in a place that used to be a salon and you would have to walk to get to it and it was a huge distance from the rooms. It's locked and it would have to be scheduled so the staff knew when a person was going to be there. They offered meals and they even offered breakfast in the middle of the night for people who want it."

"Countryside Estates is small with only 22 or 24 apartments. It is very nice, but it is not a good fit for our mom. To my understanding, they only serve two meals, lunch and dinner, and once a month or once a week, they get breakfast, but that is not enough. On the weekend, there are only one or two staff members in the kitchen. Some people who live there still drive because they have their own cars, and they have parking garage. They don't have nursing care, but they have a call light in the bathroom that goes to the nursing home next door; however, they do not have a nurse on staff. They have some activities and have a Christmas party. They have a van that will take people to town, like to the bank or shopping, which is nice. You are more on your own out there. She spends too much time alone in her apartment and will deteriorate if she does not have social stimulation. It is not designed for what she needs right now. Five or 10 years ago, it would have been perfect, but not now."

"My mom ended up going to Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg, Illinois. The care is excellent. The staff communicates well. They listen to what I say about trying to get to know my mom. That type of thing has been really beneficial. It's a nursing home, and it has rehab services. She's receiving physical and occupational therapy. We're just getting started. Unfortunately, she's had a little bit of a setback because she has one foot that's swollen, but they have been working with her. They have her sitting up more and getting out of bed more, which to me is a win. She was pretty much bedridden for four months before that. I think the food is good so far. I haven't heard her complain too much. It all looks good whenever I've been there; I've been there quite often when they're eating. It's definitely healthy food and good portions too. She's excited because there's always something that they consider "dessert," and she likes that. Her room is kept clean. It's spacious and they're definitely accommodating. Right now, she's in a double room but she's by herself. I still think there is plenty of room for two more people there, if and when that would happen. They have a really nice dining hall, and they have some activity rooms. They have the outside areas for visiting, as well, so it's very accommodating. They always have a calendar of activities, and they're always encouraging her to get involved. I feel really good about that. They have great accommodations in a rural setting, which is very peaceful, and the staff is wonderful."
