My husband is in the Life Care Center of Escondido for rehab. The staff is very involved and they follow through well on everything. The facility is really clean and well maintained. The gardens, the hallways are shining and the floors are well-kept. Everything is immaculate all the time. They have an outdoor patio where if the patient can go in a wheelchair, you can wheel him out into the outdoor patio. There's only one downfall to the outdoor patio, and that's if somebody closes the door and you're out there, don't put the little wedge in between the door to keep it cracked open. You're trapped out there. And there's no way to get back into the facility from that patio if the door gets shut behind you, and there's no way to call anybody or anything. There's not a button you could push for a doorbell or anything. You're just trapped out there. They have a therapy room. The communication is very good, they have a great social worker there, and she calls me at home, or we talk when I go to visit him almost every day.

We got Mom out of Ocean View Post-Acute. What I liked the best about it was that the food was very good, and the staffing. The people were very friendly. They did try to keep it clean, and they had a nice little gym. What I liked least about it was the fact that the shared rooms are situated so that one person has the window all to themselves and the other person is against the wall and the door, so they don't see out of the window if the other person's curtain is drawn. They have to share a bathroom. The roommates that she had were awful, and they can't control it. They didn't seem to do anything to help my mom, who was suffering with these horrible roommates. The lady that she had was constantly on the phone or had the TV on constantly, and I think she was hard of hearing, so it was very loud. They never came and asked her to turn it down, or turn it off, or try to be quiet. My mom could never sleep, and she could never rest. Therefore, she wasn't getting the full healing process. They did move her and put her by a place with a window, so she was happy she had a window, but then the roommate they put next to her had sundowners, and the lady was grabbing the curtain and pulling it back and yelling at my mom. We kept asking them, "Can you get that lady out? She's scaring my mom. She's frightened." They said, "She's nice. She is not harmful." They didn't do anything about it. Then my mom ended up getting sick again. It was kind of a godsend that they had to send my mom back to the hospital. I guess they can't just take people and move them, but I think my mom would have had a better experience had they had a private room for her and better staffing that knew how to work with her colostomy. That was a bad experience for all of us. Maybe it works for everybody else, but I told Mom, "I'll never put you back in there again, ever." I think the staff was trying hard. My mom said the food was much better than where she is now. She enjoyed the food. It's just old. The curtains are a dumb idea. If they're going to put curtains, they should put the sturdier ones, sort of like that foldable plastic, and then restructure the room so that both people get to look out the window. It is not fair. One has to be stuck in a dark corner. The dressers and furniture that they had in there were falling apart. It was just very below my standards.

My mother is now in a nursing home called Life Care Center of Escondido. She is getting the attention that she needs at this point. She is being monitored on a daily basis. She's fed and well kept for. We're glad that she is there receiving the care that she needs. Her room has a window, and she is able to open it. Her room is maintained and cleaned on a daily basis. They come in and do the housecleaning. My mother only speaks Spanish, but the activities there are in English, so she really cannot participate in anything. But my brother and I go there on a daily basis, and we take her out and play games with her. They do provide the Eucharist for her twice a week, which did not happen in the other places that she had stayed before. She is happy that those things are there for her. Also they have optional meals. If she doesn't like the food there, they provide her something else. There's alternative in the meals.

My mom went through rehab at Life Care Center of Escondido after her stroke, and she’s doing better than she was when she went to the hospital. I was very happy with the people, the service there, and how my mom was reacting to the help. I think they did a wonderful job for her. She had some problems with the food. At the beginning, they were giving her spicy food, but her stomach couldn’t take it. I think this was documented, and it did lighten up on the spices, but the food wasn’t really very good. I believe the care was OK; mom said it was excellent. The facility was clean and well taken care of. The security there at night is not very good. Also, they were missing some of their personal things.

Life Care Center of Escondido is beautiful and is almost in the country. My dad says it's gorgeous, and he loves it. I like the peacefulness. The place is quiet and home-like. It takes a lot for my dad to like any place, but he likes this one. He says he likes the food. What's cool about this place is that if he doesn't like what they serve, they will try to bend over backwards to get him something that he can eat. He's diabetic, so they try to accommodate his needs. The maintenance is good.

My mother is doing well at Life Care Center. She has a good roommate there and that helps definitely; if you are not in good condition, you have somebody right there. The food was good the first couple of days, and then it kind of dropped in quality after that.
