Financial Assistance for Home Care in St. Louis, MO

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.

Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.

Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.

Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.

Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.

Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between in-home care and home health care?

In-home care includes a range of services that collectively give seniors the ability to live at home independently. These services assist seniors with the many activities of daily living, including getting in and out of bed, walking around the home, climbing stairs, using the restroom and responding to emergencies if necessary. Other services provided by home care agencies include transportation to medical appointments, meal preparation, daily reminders and basic financial management assistance. Home health care includes all of these services and is often offered by the same agencies that provide basic in-home care. The factor that sets home health care apart, however, is that it includes skilled clinical services from licensed nursing professionals.

How do you pay for senior care at home?

While Medicare may cover home health care expenses, it generally doesn’t cover nonmedical home care costs. Fortunately, several other payment options exist. Long-term care insurance, which is typically bought from private insurance providers, covers in-home senior care. Seniors can sometimes cash in their life insurance policies for “living benefits” or “accelerated benefits” to cover these expenses. It’s sometimes possible to sell outstanding life insurance policies to senior settlement companies for a lump sum. Seniors who own their homes can also borrow against their home’s equity with reverse mortgages, some of which are federally insured.

What should I look for in a good home care agency near me in St. Louis, MO?

Every reputable home care agency shares the same goal: providing supportive services that help seniors age in place. Still, not every home care provider will fit each senior’s specific needs and preferences. Families should first make a list of several nearby home care providers. Our local home care provider search tool is a good place to start. Good providers should have long track records of successfully serving their communities. They should also provide ample information about their operations, including educational materials about services, eligibility requirements and fees. Good home care agencies willingly provide clients with references, actively include families in decision-making processes and conduct thorough background checks on employees.

What are some popular services for in-home care?

All home care providers offer assistance with the activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing and eating. They also act as mobility aids by helping seniors get around when in public and at home. Other services provided include transportation to medical appointments, meal preparation, grocery shopping, housekeeping and medication management. Additionally, home care agencies provide respite for family caregivers.

What is a home care assessment?

Before home care agencies send personal care attendants, living companions or nurses into seniors’ homes, care specialists conduct home care assessments to assess seniors’ individual needs, learn about their day-to-day schedules and desired lifestyles and set goals for in-home care. Home care assessments may also involve medical assessments where nurses take seniors’ vital signs and conduct a basic physical examination.
