"Synergy HomeCare was a unexpected find for our family! Synergy was a wonderful support system, especially at a very fragile time before my father’s passing. Before we found Synergy, we were unable to find a care service that was willing to provide just a few hours of care each morning or evening when we truly needed it. Synergy HomeCare did that for us! When we found Synergy we were so relieved to find a service that did not require someone coming in all day. Our family felt strongly about having a service that was truly sensitive to not only the care that was necessary for my father’s personal needs, but our mother’s desires for his specific care. Synergy provided the flexibility we wanted for just immediate family and the quality time to say our goodbyes. The caregivers from Synergy were compassionate, gentle and allowed our family both the physical as well as the emotional support we needed. Each care worker gave our family the care and compassionate that was necessary to ease our difficult journey. We are so grateful to have found the Synergy family. Five stars for Synergy! Thank you! "They provided compassionate care for my wife who was afflicted with ALS. They cared for my wife and helped with the housework a couple of days per week. This was a big help for me as the sole caregiver and for my wife as she was able to interact with someone other than me (my wife was a very social person). They were always very caring and friendly. "I am a client of Home Instead. We have only had it for about a month now, but I can tell you that it is pretty good. The individual that comes to see my mom is very helpful. My mother has really grown attached to her. At first, we thought my mother wouldn't want anyone coming here. So far, we haven't had a problem with the lady bathing my mother, helping her get around, and doing some stuff for my dad. I would give her a very high rating at this point. So far, we haven't had any issues with it. We are only doing 4 hours a day for three days a week. We were quite content that the prices they were charging were comparable with some of the other facilities that we looked at. This particular facility said they had people who understood dementia and how to care for dementia patients. The individuals that they're sending out are older, so I know they have that experience that we were looking for. They do the bathing, and sometimes they help feed her. When she gets in the mood, she can feed herself. For my dad, they do cleaning. They do the laundry, clean the floors, and help them with some of the household duties. The caregiver is very nice. She is patient and understanding. Our primary concern was that my mother would not be receptive, but she enjoys this lady's company. They have a good relationship, and I think it has only been about a month. The individual has established a good relationship with my mother and my dad."

"We used Always Best Care of Macomb County for my friend and they were wonderful. We chose them because they had a little edge on the caregiving model that they use and they negotiated the price with us. The caregivers were professional and prompt. They provided my friend with companionship, helped with feeding, and they were available at night for nighttime issues that arose. They were also there to pass meds to her, to facilitate her taking her anti-anxiety pills, and to reassure her. They were always prompt in returning my phone calls and they kept a notebook so we could communicate. They solicited feedback too."

"We needed a short term home health care person for my Mom and Right At Home in Livonia Mi was one of the agencies given to us by the Rehab facility. We had two different care givers for Mom and were very happy with both - and so was Mom! I was totally out of my depth and called with questions often and they never made me feel like I was a pest and in fact they have gone above and beyond on helping me get the necessary receipts and paperwork from them for insurance purposes. Should the need ever arise that we need home health care I will certainly call them again!"

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Lake Orion:
Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
---|---|---|---|
Long Term Care Ombudsman Program | (866) 485-9393 | 15851 S. US 27, Suite 73, Lansing. MI 48906 | Ombudsmen who staff this free, federally funded program work to support the needs, investigate the complaints and defend the rights of seniors in long-term care arrangements. Family members may also contact ombudsmen on behalf of seniors if they have concerns about the quality of care or questions about relevant policies. All communications are kept confidential. |
AAA Community Dining Programs | (800) 852-7795 | 29100 Northwestern Hwy Suite 400, Southfield, MI 48034 | The local Area Agency on Aging organizes regular congregate meal opportunities in senior centers and churches. In addition to helping elderly Lake Orion residents get nutritious meals, the community dining programs give seniors a chance to socialize with peers and make new friends. Congregate meals are open to seniors 60 years of age and up, and spouses of any age are also welcome to join. |
Myride2 | (855) 697-4332 | 29100 Northwestern Highway, Suite 400, Southfield, MI 48034 | Another project of the Area Agency on Aging, the myride2 service helps seniors find a bevy of transportation options in the area. Services include assisting seniors with continuing driving education, connecting seniors with wheelchair-accessible transportation, and setting up private rides when needed. The myride2 assistance itself is free, but there may be a cost for third-party transportation services. |
Lake Orion Community Center and Senior Services | (248) 391-0304 | 1335 Joslyn Road, Orion Charter Township, MI 48362 | This community center helps seniors improve their quality of life through social development. Programs and activities offered through the center include organized sports, exercise classes, group trips and book clubs, all designed to help seniors build relationships with others in the community. The Orion Center’s building includes a branch of the Orion Township Public Library. |
Older Persons’ Commission Meals on Wheels | (248) 608-0264 | 650 Letica Drive, Rochester, MI 48307 | Seniors 60 years and up who are unable to shop or cook for themselves are eligible to receive up to seven hot, home-delivered meals a week from this volunteer organization, usually beginning within 24 hours of the original request. Meal delivery volunteers also perform wellness checks. There are no income prerequisites, but the organization does ask for voluntary donations. |
