I moved to Gateway Village Apartments in Azle. It's a seniors-only apartment, and I have my own apartment here. I chose it because it was the only place I could get into that I could afford. It's also a very nice community. It's small, and the residents and the manager are very nice. It's really beautiful here, like being in the country. There are other apartment buildings around, but there are lots of trees and birds, too. You can see the stars really well from here at night, and deer are running around. The manager is not here every day of the week, but there's a way to get hold of her for emergencies. They have a small budget since it's a smaller community, and the manager who runs it is also in charge of more than one community. So is the maintenance staff. There are only two people in the maintenance department, and they're responsible for more than one community. However, there are emergency numbers for anything that is important, and they will come running. I know there are smaller things that don't get taken care of sometimes because they don't have the time, but the important ones are taken care of. You are responsible for taking care of yourself. It's an older building. The place I lived in before was also really old, and it wasn't good, but this place is nice. I'm in a wheelchair, so I got a handicapped apartment with a walk-in shower, and that's been great for me. You prepare your own food since it's a regular apartment, but they have Meals on Wheels that deliver out here. I've heard there's also a bus line that runs in Azle for handicapped people. I don't know Azle very well and don't get out much, but I know I can find it if I need it, so anybody would be able to get it. A lot of the residents, when it's cool enough in the evenings, will get outside and gather together to talk and do stuff. That's how I've met them. I was out walking my dog when it was cool enough. I have a support dog, and lots of the residents have dogs because the place is pet-friendly. I stopped and started talking with them, and they were just so friendly, they're nice to me, and really helpful. Everybody around here is really kind. There are lots of benches and picnic areas around. The residents usually gather around, a lot of times in the mornings and in the evenings, in groups in front of someone's apartment. The only utility you have to pay for is your electricity. The other utilities are paid for, like your water and sewage. A lot of these places make you pay extra for trash, and for having them come and spray. They charge you for every little thing, but this place doesn't. They also have low-income apartments, and I'm on the list once they have that open up. I would hate for this to happen, but if someone were to have to move out because they can't live on their own, so they have to move in with their family or move into a nursing home or something, a spot opens up, and I'm supposed to be able to get that.
