I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My recent visit to see my mother‑in‑law at this facility raised serious concerns about the quality of care and the professionalism of the staff. When we arrived around 11 a.m., she had a strong, unpleasant smell, her clothes were dirty, and her hands were tightly closed with a sticky, foul‑smelling substance inside. These are basic hygiene tasks that should be addressed during routine morning care, especially for a resident with significant physical and cognitive limitations. When I asked a nurse for assistance, she responded in a rude and dismissive manner. Instead of offering help or an explanation, she immediately labeled my mother‑in‑law as a “difficult patient.” When I asked if I could give her water, the nurse again responded harshly, without any compassion or professionalism. The nurse also stated that she does not discuss my mother‑in‑law’s health with my husband, even though he is her son, because “the daughter is in charge.” This was said in a sharp, insensitive tone. Regardless of legal arrangements, there are appropriate and respectful ways to communicate with family members who are concerned about a loved one’s well‑being. The situation was so distressing that my husband, who rarely shows emotion, was in tears seeing his mother in this condition. No family should have to witness a loved one neglected like this. Families trust nursing facilities to provide cleanliness, dignity, and respectful communication. What we witnessed did not meet those standards. I hope management reviews this situation carefully and ensures that residents — especially those who cannot advocate for themselves — receive the attentive, humane care they deserve.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Allendale Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center is old and dated, but that's the least of it. I can live with that. It's not clean. My mother's tray top has not been cleaned in days. The bottom of the tray, the metal part that holds it, is filthy and corroded. The bathrooms are worn and not nice to look at. On the first day, my mother had a room that fit three people. At one point, there was another woman there who passed during the night, and my mother knew it, and she knew the woman wasn't moving, but they didn't realize it until noon. Like everywhere else, after COVID, they're short-staffed there. Everybody on the floor is moaning, and I'm sure they're in pain. Just now, my mother had put on her blinkers so that they would remove her food tray from lunch. And they came in and said, 'Your light has been on for three hours. What can I do for you?' Well, why didn't you come two and a half hours ago? And we almost forgot why we put the light on, and it was so that they removed her food tray. I had to call about four days into her first week and begged them to shower my mother. They hadn't showered or washed her down yet. My mother was going from the hospital into rehab, and we were forced to take a place that had a bed. If I had a choice, this would not have been on my list. The staff is nice, personality-wise. However, they have not once brought the food that she ordered. Activities have been coming in twice a day for 30 minutes. This all goes to Medicare, but I don't know what we're paying. But I'm sure it's too much because the place is not nice.
