"We are in the market for assisted living for my mother. We visited the facility and felt very at home the minute we walked in the door. They just got new flooring and the building looks very nice. We really liked the fact that they don't charge extra for every little thing. We will likely choose North River Village in the near future."

"The Crossings at North River was very nice. I noted some safety features that I like. The units were nice. It's all brand new. The marketing director took me around. And every staff member we came across greeted us nicely."

"I toured the Plantation Manor Retirement Community. The people were very nice and helpful. It was kind of a small facility. The only room available that they had was a three-person, and that was kind of a small room even to have three people, including dressers. They had their bedding, a little fire table, and a dresser drawer. They were doing some kind of rocks hanging from the garden. They had put the rocks together, and it was beautiful. Some of them made them look like marble. My husband and I went back the following weekend because they had a car show there. My husband had taken his car and they had a car show for the seniors. I was able to see in the garden all of the rocks that they had out there, and they had them lined up and shaped like stars. It was nice. Some of the seniors who were painting on these rocks were kind of handicapped or didn't have mobility in their hands. They had nurses who were helping them by holding the paintbrush, and I felt that was very nice and caring for them. The food was delicious."

"I was very impressed with Oaks on Parkwood. They had six or seven buildings that housed so many apartments. They had little individual dining rooms for each building where they can do things that just involve their building, and then they had the big overall dining room. They had a special breakfast on Wednesdays for everybody in the complex and Bible study afterwards. They had an exercise room, an activity room, a fitness center, and an indoor swimming pool."

"Regency Retirement Village - Birmingham was great. They had private rooms, and the dining area was like a cafeteria. The staff was great. It was memory care, but they didn't accept Medicaid, so we couldn't go there."

"The memory care unit of Truewood by Merrill, Riverchase was very clean. The rooms looked very, very nice. The only thing that I was concerned about was the location. It was not convenient to me. The road I have to travel is going to have bad traffic. I also did not think much of the activity center or the area they had. My mom probably won't even go out there anyway. There were a few chairs in it or a couch. It was almost in a large hallway. It wasn't in a room, but it was out in the open; maybe it was what they intended for memory care. However, it was a real secure environment, and I was really impressed with the staff. I wouldn't let that activity center deter me from them. They had a beautiful outdoor area, beautiful rooms, and the residents looked happy. The management also seemed good. Sandra, who was the sales manager, and Chip, who was the director, were both great. They just came right out when I came in, so I only waited a few minutes. They came and spent all the time with me and were very thorough."

"I went to Briar Glen Alzheimer's Special Care Center. Everybody was very nice. They had a lot of areas outdoors where people could sit. I thought it was very nice. The rooms were big enough, and it's close to home which is the most important thing. The staff was very nice. She seemed knowledgeable, and she did not pressure me to make a decision. They have a barber (I believe she mentioned that), and they do activities with the patients. They were doing chair exercises when I was there. It felt pretty homey. It didn't feel like a hospital, so that was good."

"I visited Chateau Vestavia, and it was good. It was lively, and they have lots of activities going on. It has a more casual atmosphere. I saw some people playing board games. The staff was very friendly and seemed a little bit more casual. They were really extremely professional, as well. They showed me a couple of rooms, and they did a good job in showing me a lot of options. "

"Country Cottages was small, warm, and receptive. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and functional. The staff during the tour were warm and accommodating. They had good activities. They engage them in various games, and they were eager to help the residents. "

"My father-in-law has moved into LakeView Estates. There are two deciding factors why we chose them. First, it was the most affordable place that we saw. Secondly, he is very attached to his dog, and they were willing for him to bring his dog with him, but none of the other places were. It's a two-story building and there are about 50 residents. There's a courtyard in the middle that is smaller than we would have liked for it to be, but it's at least an outside space that is safe. It's pretty standard, it's not flashy, but it is clean and well-kept. The only thing I didn't love about the physical facility was that the building was all carpeted. Everywhere else we went had hard flooring, whether it was vinyl tile or linoleum or something like that. The carpet was a little off-putting because there are accidents and urine smells and things like that, so I wish that they had hard flooring instead of carpet. I have very positive interactions with the people. They care about the residents. They know the residents well. They're very kind to them. We saw the menu, and it was very adequate. We felt like it was a good variety and good options for my father-in-law. They have an activity calendar posted in several places in the facility. And they also have an app that you can download on your phone. Whenever my father-in-law goes to an activity, they will check him in, so you can follow along on the app each day to the things that he's going to, which is kind of cool. So you can see if he's getting out or not. They have a lot of good stuff going on."

"I visited The Ridge at Grandview. I met with the lady responsible for providing the tour, and she explained everything to me, gave me a brochure, and we went through all the rooms. I see why it was called Grandview. It was grand. It was a step up from the other facility. It was very, very nice, and if I had to put my loved one there, and it was a fit, it would be a place like The Ridge at Grandview. They showed me the area where the patients socialize, watch TV, and play games. They showed a movie theater room. The rooms were exquisite. They started on a lower level, and they went up even higher. The facility was excellent, very immaculate, a very upscale place, and it was beautiful."

"I have been to Somerby at St. Vincent's One Nineteen probably two years ago. My mom has a friend who lives there. They were very good. The facility was very nice, very lovely, and clean. The staff was nice. They had a gym, a pool, a workout room, and a bistro."

"First, the facilities are very attractive, both inside and out. The apartments are generously sized and intelligently planned, with great amenities, including balconies and patios. Common areas are inviting, clean and have interesting attractions, such as the finch exhibits. The dining room was more like a fine restaurant but inviting and friendly at the same time. What distinguishes this facility, at least to my way of thinking, are the grounds and the staff. This is the only place of several I went with my mother that explained the details so completely and gave helpful general advice. The grounds are quiet and have a private feel although the facility is in a conveniently located near retail and entertainment. What really got my attention - the raised bed gardens! Residents may have their own "garden" for roses, flowers or vegetables. The heavy lifting is done by staff. It's a great place for residents to interact, be active and enjoy the outdoors. Since Mom and I both find gardening highly therapeutic, we felt this was a most important asset. "
