Although Nebraska is not as popular for retirees as sunnier spots, the Cornhusker State has a lot to offer its senior residents. The low crime rate is a plus for safety-conscious seniors, and although winters are cold, the rest of the year has plenty of sunshine. In addition, the cost of living is around 10% lower than the national average, allowing older adults to stretch their budget longer in retirement. There’s also plenty for seniors to do, including golf courses, a strong arts scene and events throughout the year. With more than 16% of Nebraska’s 1.9 million people aged 65 and above, it’s easy to find a friend to explore with.
Independent living offers housing in a community designed for older adults, usually aged 55 and over. These communities are designed for people who live independently, so they don’t provide medical care or personal assistance. However, most take care of outdoor chores and may also offer meals and housekeeping services, allowing seniors to spend more time enjoying their retirement.
In Nebraska, the average cost of independent living is $2,722 per month. This guide provides seniors with more information about the cost of independent living in the state, funding independent living and resources available for older adults in Nebraska.
The Cost of Independent Living in Nebraska
Note: Independent Living offers seniors an active, independent lifestyle in a residential setting among their peers. We established estimated costs of Independent Living because cost data from an authoritative source isn’t available. Independent Living usually costs 30-40% less than Assisted Living, so we used the Assisted Living prices found in the 2021 Genworth Financial Cost of Care Survey and deducted 35%.
Nebraska’s cost of Independent Living is $276 less than the national average of $2,925 a month. Seniors in the Cornhusker State also pay less for Independent Living than those in most surrounding states. Independent Living costs more in Kansas by $328, Iowa by $190 and Wyoming by $61. However, seniors pay approximately $471 less in South Dakota and $699 less in Missouri.
Cost data was only available for three cities in Nebraska. Of those, two have higher costs compared to the state and national averages and one is significantly lower. Nebraska’s capital Lincoln has the highest Independent Living cost at $3,065, and its most populous city, Omaha, has the second-highest cost at $3,024. Alternately, Grand Island’s average cost of Independent Living is $760 less than the state average and $1,036 lower than the national average.
The average cost of Adult Day Health Care in Nebraska is $807 less than Independent Living, but it doesn’t include housing. Assisted Living is 35% higher at $4,076 per month and includes personalized assistance with daily activities. Nursing Home Care is much higher, $7,483 for a semiprivate room or $8,289 for a private room, but offers round-the-clock care. Independent Living in Nebraska is about half the cost of receiving long-term care services at home. In-Home Care, also called Homemaker Services, averages $5,148 and Home Health Care costs an average of $5,339 per month.

Can You Use Medicare or Medicaid to Pay for Independent Living in Nebraska?
Unfortunately, you cannot use Medicaid and Medicare to help pay the monthly fee for residing in an Independent Living community. For seniors who need help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), there may be financial assistance programs available to help cover the cost of care in Independent Living. For more information about financial assistance for those who need a higher level of care, read our guide to Assisted Living in Nebraska.
Read on for more information about using alternative means to make Independent Living more affordable, such as retirement funds, the sale of a home, etc.
Paying for Independent Living in Nebraska
Although medical insurance doesn’t cover the cost of independent living, there are many ways to fund a move into an independent living community. As housing, transport and food are often included, many seniors find their regular retirement income covers some or all of the monthly costs of independent living. Many people choose an independent living community when downsizing and use the proceeds from the sale of their homes to fund their new lifestyle. Seniors may also wish to consider renting their property or using its equity by taking out a reverse mortgage. Our guide to independent living has more information about funding options.

The rooms were all renovated to be brand new. They had new carpet and new appliances. They actually had full kitchens. Everything was brand new there.
The person who assisted me was fine. He wanted to make sure that my mom would be comfortable and certainly did that. He was good.
We walked around and there was a library and a movie theater. My mom chose not to live there because there were no people around outside doing anything.

I really liked Fountain View Senior Living among the ones I’ve looked at, so I intend to live there. My impression of the staff is very good. I talk to the directors all the time, they stay in touch with you to see how you’re doing, and they all seem very nice. The 1-bedroom was very nice, but they had different sizes. I was able to reserve a large one, so I was very pleased, and it had a balcony. I’m looking forward to it. They had all kinds of stuff like exercise, hobbies and crafts, the basic things with most of these places. It’s not brand new or real fancy, but it’s very, very nice. They did not serve me food, which is unusual, because I’ve been to many places that serve lunch or dinner. I can have my apartment either independent or assisted, and I can eat in both dining rooms. It was pretty quiet the day that I was there, and I saw people around sitting in different areas.

She had fallen a couple of times, and they took her down to the clinic and tested her out. They have a library, a store, a computer room, a crafts room, and a sewing room. They also have a pub with a pool table. Virtually, they have everything there except a swimming pool. And they have bus trips all over. They just went to Nebraska City a few days ago. They would go to Walmart and Target. It is very, very active. The people there are very alive. My friend loves it there. Everybody you talk to loves it there. The food is so good. She has three meals a day, and the food is so good that I would go with her and eat a couple of times a week.

I like The Meriwether. It’s relatively a new place. It was very nice. It’s newer, and I like that. It was built in 2019, so it was a very new facility. I only met one person, and she was amazing, and I liked her. The rooms were beautiful, spacious, and all handicapped accessible. I loved the rooms, well, they were new. I liked it. The disadvantage was they only provided five meals a month, and they were a little bit a lot more expensive than the other facility. So that was why I kind of turned them down, but there wasn’t anything bad about them. They were all nice. They were very spacious. They showed me their workout room, where they get their hair done, and where they watch football games, and it was just very nice. The upkeep was really good. It was great. It was nice, and the dining room was amazing. They had a special chef that came in and had specialties every day, so the food was kind of nice.
