"My husband was staying at Patriots Colony at Williamsburg. He was in their nursing facility and he later was in hospice there. They have a memory care facility as well. They have everything there. Everything seemed to be very nice and well taken care of. The people were very friendly, but like most nursing homes, the residents don't really get a lot of attention, especially immobile people like my husband. They leave you on your own most of the time. At first he really liked the food, but he got tired of it. I thought the food seemed to be really nice."

"My parents have an apartment in the main building and have lived there for the past several years (since it's opening). We have found it to be a wonderful place with caring, attentive staff, tons of activities (they frequently invite us and the grandkids for shows/concerts/movies that are top-quality). My Dad is on the Bocce Ball team as well as the wood-working group. They stay active in the gym which is world-class- one of the olympic teams practices there due to the type of machines...not sure what it is, but they are top notch as well as the pool! This is a very high-end retirement community and has some of the best staff/chefs! I have worked in about 27 nursing homes/communities, so I've seen a variety of them when I was in my clinical job; so I speak from experience. I would highly recommend Windsor Meade to anyone...my parents have been very happy there!"

"My great grandmother moved into the Masonic Home of Virginia at the age of 96. She was still very active, and this home accommodated her for the last ten years of her life. Often when I came to visit I would find her shooting pool, or walking around the large estate with other residents. The cafeteria served quality, nutritious food and were happy to accommodate visitors. The nursing staff were kind, attentive, and respectful without fail, and I sincerely appreciate the care they provided my grandmother. Her room was modest, but spacious enough, and quite ideal once her eyesight succumbed to glaucoma and macular degeneration. I never had to worry about her when she stayed there, and always found her in great spirits. The facility was quiet, although they had multiple activities, church services, and everyday living accommodations to keep the residents busy. The facility was also clean, and obviously well cared for. It was lovely to visit her as well as get to know the other residents. It was good for my grandmother to live there, as it kept her active for years, and kept her from being lonely. "

"Sanders Retirement Village was very nice, clean, bright, and very homey. All rooms were single occupancy, not shared rooms, and very roomy and well lit with nice furniture and private bathrooms. They had a lot of activities, but I think they should include more physical activities because most of them were lectures and movies. My dad was more interested in physical activities like bowling and other games. The facility was in a very nice setting within a beautiful neighborhood a block away from downtown Gloucester, so it's very convenient for the residents. The staff was very nice. I would recommend this facility. "

"The staff was incredibly polite and helpful, my chess partner suffered from a stroke that left the right side of her body paralyzed, the nurse that helped her was very kind, not condescending at all. The maintenance people were very efficient, unless something had to be ordered, any issue was fixed within minutes. It is however in a very old building, so things seem to break down fairly often. The Sunday service was very pleasant, and the choir is made up of residents of the home. The activities that the residents could participate in included bingo, and any card game you can imagine, from skipbo to spades (and some of those old women were putting down hefty bets.) to gin rummy. They have an excellent physical therapy regimen for my friend, which she says is helping immensely. After a couple chess matches we went down and played in a wii bowling tournament organized by the home, and had tons of fun. Came real close to winning too. Then we ate dinner together - apparently they have a great deal of variety - we had panbroiled lemon chicken with seasoned potatoes. I can't say much about the average meal, but thus one was great. Overall, I would give the Hermitage a 10/10, as would Agatha. RIP. "

"My mother-in-law lives in Westminster-Canterbury Richmond, which is larger and more formal than the other places I have visited. This community has so many people. They have groups that thrive, and it's like everyone finds their niche and plugs into it. It's easier to find a group that you belong to when there's more of them. Their facilities are top-notch, but the cost there is prohibitive. The people are always coming and going. I have dined there many times (we had Christmas and Thanksgiving there), and their food is phenomenal; it's like staying at the Homestead or Greenbrier. It's a good situation for the residents. I have not seen anyone at this community that's not thriving."
