I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I would never ever allow my loved ones to stay in this facility. Not because it's terrible.. it's just that it's not good enough for my standards when it comes to facility where my mother or father may spend the last days of their very colorful lives inside. Discovery Memory Care is BASIC. BASIC means STANDARD. If you are a person who needs a halfway decent place (STANDARD) for your loved ones who are "not all there" to die then this place will do just fine. Blowing it up as something more than BASIC is just a terrible lie. When you first walk inside it is nice, it has a front desk and nice waiting room area with cookies and coffee.. but after you go through those double doors into the real place where the old folks are at the quality rapidly deteriorates. Behind those doors a stifling air hits your airways. The atmosphere feels grimey from lack of air circulation. The pictures displayed on this site are also very old. Rooms and outside areas may have once appeared that picturesque but pale in comparison to today..and I absolutely mean TODAY (05/25/2018). Environment is everything and to not upkeep it or make accomodations for those who have lived their entire lives up until this point to end up here and have hallways riddled with icons and actors of a bygone era is just tacky design. Where is the life in this place? Why does everything feel so out of place and leave me feeling drained for energy myself and I'm just visiting?? Q's recommended that I answer: What are the rooms like? Pretty barren. Kept neat and clean as a positive but lacking in a view. The windows face a bleak parking lot to a living complex and occasional wanderlust vagrants. What activities do the residents enjoy? I observed a few "arts & craft" days. That keeps the kids busy which is really good given that they have not much else to do all day. In fact.. what do you have them do all rest of the day besides wander the one hallway back and forth looking for a way out?? What is the culture like? It's caucasian. Elderly caucasian people. If you are a person of color you shouldn't alienate your loved one and place them in this facility. Where is the approval rating from the state of Washington for Discovery Memory Care? Are the current staff really qualified? I know of a woman who used to work there 20 years ago..she still resides in Sequim..but she even agrees that the "memory" of what Discovery Memory Care once was is more of what people talk about than the reality of what it is today.

Discovery Memory Care is where we have settled. The people there were from another facility, and many of them quit because of the problems they were having. They moved to Discovery, so we moved my wife there. I know the staff, and they are very good; our selection is based not on the facility so much but on the care and attention that is provided by the personnel. The food is above average, but it is definitely institutionalized because of the fact that they are cooking for 30 or 40 people at a time. They have provided lunch for me periodically, and it has been very good. There is a schedule of activities on the wall, and they have something most every day. And then they have people coming in -- entertainment groups, music, dogs and stuff like that. They have a fairly good routine. The seniors don’t get enough exercise, but in every place I have visited that is the case. They are not doing any exercise therapy, but they do get a chance to do some walking up and down the halls and it is based on whether the individual is interested or not. My wife is in a wheelchair at the present time, so she doesn’t get a lot of exercise.

I visited this facility

We were pleased with what we saw at Discovery Memory Care. It was clean, and the residents were all well taken care of and happy. I didn’t see anything that was a red flag. We looked at the facility, the dining hall and the main meeting activities. They have outdoor craft areas and a lot of activities for people who are able to go outside on short trips somewhere. The person who assisted us was very professional and had been in health care facility for a number of years so she was knowledgeable and very pleasant.

I moved my mom into the Discovery Memory Care facility in July, and I just cannot say enough good things about them. Always friendly, and sooooooo helpful. gracious in answering all my questions. I can eat with her, come and go as I please. Someone there always knows where my mom is, I just have to ask, and there she is. My mom loves the place. She NEVER ate pizza that I ever knew about, but she eats it now. She is so happy. She looks good. she's happy, loves the care I can only say GREAT things about the whole staff and operation. I've had meals with her, and the food choices are good. She is eating things I have never seen her eat before, and she has no complaints. we are all happy

Sincerely Grateful

Discovery Memory Care administrators, caregivers, nursing staff and facility general workers serve with compassion and work as a team. I completely trust this facility to care for my mother and see that her needs are met. They are warmly attentive and communicative to family members, friends and visitors to the facility. They should be made aware of this appreciation and honored for their dedicated services. Memory care can be very challenging and this facility gives more than 100% to meet the challenge effectively, efficiently, and very compassionately - seeing each resident is well-protected and loved well.

My mother is always smiling when I visit her at Discovery Memory Care. She gets to go on great field trips with the other residents and the pictures are so fun to see. Mom is always smiling in the pictures they take of her. Mom's apartment room is very pleasant. It is clean and neat and tidy. Our father, her husband of 65 years passed away a year ago and left Mom without her closest partner. Since then Mom has bonded with other residents who are loving and caring towards her as are the staff members. We have so much fun watching Seahawks games together in the activity room and getting in the spirit with Seahawks decorations. I don't think Mom ever watched football before this!

Caring....this is the first word that comes to mind when I think of the staff at Discovery Memory Center. This applies to all: administrators, nursing staff, med tech staff, caregivers, recreation, and maintanance and custodial. I often stop in amazement listening to someone on the custodial staff stop their work and take time to interact with a resident. The residents come first, their needs come first, responding to them comes first. How wonderful to know that those who care for my mother, give her a feeling of importance. As I have visited my mother over the past two years, I have realized that the residents in this facility are not senile, they are not people to be hidden away, they are individuals that lived long and productive lives and still need and deeply desire respect, positive attention, and acceptance. THIS staff provides that far beyond any other facility I have visited. CARING, what more can one desire when one places a parent into the care of others! To the Discovery Staff...my deepest, heartfelt gratitude. You are making my mother's last days pleasant and meaningful.

I have been an "on again-off again" volunteer at Discovery for several years. When i had to scale back my volunteer activities for health reasons, I kept Discovery as one of my few volunteer places. You can't help but fall in love with the residents there. And the compassion that is show to the ones who live there is truly heart-warming. And not just from the caregivers but from all the staff. It might be hard to picture, but those residents really do have a wonderful quality of life there. God Bless the staff for everything they do.

The care provided by this memory care facility is awesome! The staff truly cares about their residents and they do all they can to make sure everyone is as comfortable and happy as possible. Their activity program is probably the best in the state. The residents are kept engaged and busy a good portion of each day. My mother has been living there for more than a year now and whenever I visit, she is clean and well-cared for which is what every daughter wants for their mother. Thank you Discovery!

Discovery Memory Care provided a safe haven and home for my friend's mother for the last four years of her life. During her final days, we remained by her side and I had the opportunity to observe what an amazing facility this is and how gifted the staff truly are. Even though this was a very difficult time for all of us, the staff were extremely attentive, compassionate, loving and nurturing. They made my friend's mom as comfortable as possible and they were very supportive and caring towards the entire family. It gave us all peace of mind, knowing that she was in good hands and that the staff always had her best interest in mind. I was very impressed by how well Discovery Memory Care is managed and I was in awe of the level of commitment displayed by all the staff members. I can't thank them enough for everything they did for us.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

In September of 2013 I had to make the hardest decision of my life. For 2 years I had cared for my mother in my home, because her stay in the nursing home had been a nightmare. All hope for living was gone from her life. At my home, she regained her vitality. But when she could no longer walk, and falls were becoming too common, she and I realized that living in my home was no longer an option. But, to me, putting my mom in a home was at best a prison sentence, and at worst a death sentence. Then I was told about Discovery Memory Care. It seemed to good to be true. This was nothing like the nursing home care I had expected and delayed for 2 years. Discovery Memory Care was the answer to prayer. From my perspective safety, handling medications, working with her doctor, and protection are my priorities. Discovery exceeds my expectations in this regard. The Med Techs are incredibly dedicated, conscientious, and caring. But my mom wants her autonomy and to be allowed to live life as she wants. Again Discovery exceeds her expectations. Her room feels like an apartment to her. She is allowed to go to bed when she wants, get up when she wants, eat when she wants, and control the temperature in her room. Yet, when she needs help and assistance it is always there! Her Caregivers are exceptional people: caring, dedicated and kind. Thanks to an incredibly competent activity director, Discovery Memory Care has numerous activities, musical events, and special occasions. Mom is always encouraged to attend and participate, but this is also completely of her choosing. I recently read a new book, "Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End" by Atal Gawande. This book describes the perfect living arrangement for the elderly. As I read this book I could only feel grateful that in small Sequim, we had a facility to match! Thanks to the incredibly dedicated Caregivers and Staff at Discovery Memory Care, the hardest decision of my life, became one of the best decisions of my life.

I visited this facility

Discovery Memory Care was really good. I almost put him in there. It was a good option. He would have been in a respite care room. It was a nice, big room, but he wouldn't have had as much of a view as I would have liked him to have. We determined our own menus, and the administrator told us they could have the food brought in, so it's really good. You get choices in things. I know they had little outing trips that they would take. They did allow the people that are in for respite to go on those things. They had a calendar with all kinds of activities on it. If I have to take him somewhere, it would probably be the place I'd go with him now. The maintenance person or the resident manager was very nice to us and very good about accommodating whatever we needed. They were very good. They were patient with us.

Discovery was a little older but seemed to be well-run. It seemed to be a nice facility. They seemed to have adequate staff. They had a lot of activities for the patients, and they seemed to have a good dietary type of program. The rooms seemed to be pretty adequate in size.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

I spent alot of time researching and visiting assisted living and Alzheimer's facilities within a 75 mile radius as I prepared to make the difficult decision to move my family member from home to a place with 24 hour care. From the moment I walked in the door, I was treated like a person and not a sale to be made. I didn't have an appointment as I had been advised to visit and see them unannounced to get to see the "real picture". I was greeted warmly by the gal in the front office who asked me a few questions about my situation. Then she offered me coffee or tea and a homemade cookie before asking me if I would mind having a seat for a moment until the intake person got off the phone. Once I was introduced to the intake person and we went into her office, all I can say is WOW. As we started talking, it became obvious that this was definitely all about me and my family member and not a sales job. Her way of asking questions and her compasionate nature made me feel better about opening up and I actually cried. I even learned alot about the disease and how it impacts the family more than you would think. As we were leaving her office to take a tour, a bunch of folks (I learned that they were actually residents coming back from a bus trip) were coming through the lobby. The gal asked if I minded waiting a few minutes as she greeted the folks and opened the door for them. I think what amazed me most was the way the staff interacted with them and the hugs & kisses that they got. During the tour - which happened at lunch - the intake gal talked about the different areas and how they were utilized by the folks who live there. She even took the information I had told her and talked about how my husband could enjoy the areas and the different activities. What surprised me the most was how happy the folks who lived there were. I'm not sure what I expected, but this wasn't what I had pictured. And every staff member that we came across during the tour stopped and took the time to say hi and introduce themselves. After the tour we went back to her office and talked some more. I asked questions and she gave answers, explanations, and suggestions. I received a packet of information to take home with me, but she first reviewed it with me. The gal explained the process that is necessary when preparing for someone to move in. As we got to the end of our meeting, I instinctively felt myself bracing for the hard sell. But it never came. Instead, she asked me a different set of questions that made me think and face reality without having it slap me in the face. That's when I knew this is where my family member needed to be. Although I didn't make a committment at that time, I got a hug. And she said she would check in with me in a few days after I had a chance to digest everything. And she did. She even sent me a cute card thanking me for coming in. After working through all of my emotions and the emotions of the rest of the family, we made the decision to move our family member into Discovery Memory Care. What I really appreciated what that she never treated my family member as a "sale" or an apartment to be rented. It was all about what was best for them - and for us. And we have never regretted our decision. Granted, there was a transition period - kind of like a honeymoon where the parties involved get to know each other. And there is no such thing as perfection. We've had a few ups and downs. But I have to say that my family member is happy and well cared for. And any issues we may have had were always addressed and resolved to our satisfaction. I have no problem recommending Discovery to others.

I visited this facility

I want to share my experience with Discovery Memory Care with you. We left my 87 year old mother at Discovery Memory Care in September 2011, since the Dungeness and Sherwood facilities in Sequim don't have space available for respite care. Each stay for mother was four days. The charge was $1,450.00, in advance. The first time we picked mother up, she was in a urine soaked Depends, and the skin on her buttocks had dry fecal matter. The second time, we found her in much worse condition. Her eyes were crusted with discharge, her lips were cracked. Her face, caked with food. She was wearing the same clothes she had on four days earlier, and a diarrhea filled Depends undergarment. I had taken in a medication to be given to her, in case of diarrhea - but they hadn't given her any of the medication. Her hands, knee and shin were badly bruised (probably from a fall). Her feet and ankles were both swollen and hard. She had reddened skin on her back and buttocks. I actually had to shower her, at the facility shower, and dress her in clean clothes before I could put her into the car to take her home. I spoke with the RN in charge of the aides who are the actual caregivers, and to the Executive Director, who apologized said "those aren't our standards." No, those aren't the standards they advertise, but it's the reality of care my mother received while at Discovery Memory Care on two occasions. The cooing, sugar coated greetings in the lobby are a act. Dont entrust them with the care of your loved one.

Provider Response

All of our Communities strive to provide safe, quality, compassionate and supportive care to our residents and family members, regardless of the length of their stay with us. Discovery Memory Care's goal is to treat each Resident with the utmost dignity with attention to the smallest of details, whether providing personal care or engaging in social programming. We realize that there may be times when we are not perfect and our leadership team at Discovery Memory Care makes every effort to work through those missteps with the common goal of always doing what is best for the Resident. We also realize that each person's perception is their reality and we are saddened to learn of this family's dissatisfaction. While a four-day stay at Discovery Memory Care costs significantly less than the amount quoted by this family member, at this point, money is not the issue. Customer satisfaction is. And the purpose of this response is to make you aware that the Executive Committee has reviewed this testimonial as well as discussed it with the Executive Director of Discovery Memory Care and apologize for the unsatisfactory respite stay. We continue to extend an invitation for this family to allow us the opportunity to exceed their expectations in the future.

My mother in law had been to a couple of places before discovery. Once there , she actually began to thrive. She's happy there, and has made many friends. They have great activities and music, and provide the care she needs. The staff has been wonderful, and understanding , in everything, helping us understand something we have never had to deal with until now. Thank you all for all the care you have given her.

We chose Discovery because the home feels real. The atmosphere and activities seem appropriate to the real needs of the residents. The staff understands the family's needs and what we are going through. They made a difficult situation easier. From the moment my mother walked through the doors, she was treated with love, respect, care and understanding. And, a year and a half later, still is. Thank you Discovery!
