"Our tour of Brookdale Elizabeth City was wonderful. It's awesome. I would love for my friend to be there. We liked it because it's something similar to our apartment. It doesn't make my friend feel too closed in. He also likes the idea that there are other men there. Regarding the staff, I'm a loving person, I'm a caring person, and I love to help other people, and I feel the same vibes from the staff."

"My mother-in-law is staying at The Gates House. It's a clean facility, and everybody has been nice so far. But I feel like we're probably not getting answers as far as trying to find out if they're cleaning her sheets and doing her laundry. And I'm not getting clear answers as to if she's getting the actual care that we're paying for. It goes by a scale, like it starts at $4000 a month and then it can go to $4600 to $4800 depending on the level of care. They're charging us the $4800 because they're saying she needs extra care, but I don't know if she's getting the extra care that we're paying for. The rooms are good size. They have a nice-sized bathroom attached to all the rooms. We have a private room for my mother-in-law, but I haven't seen a room where there's more than one person in it. As for the staff, everybody that we've come across has been pretty nice. I haven't had any issues with them. But I wish I was getting more straightforward answers from them. Most of the food is pretty good. It smells good, too. The couple of times that we have been there, my mother-in-law hasn't complained about it. Regarding value for money, I understand that they're caring for somebody and providing a roof over their head and all that, but it's just an exorbitant amount of money. We're paying extra for extra care, but I'm not getting verification that the things we're paying for are being carried out. Nevertheless, the best part about it is that it's eight minutes away from our house. And we live in a very rural area, so the location is the main thing."

"We chose The Landings of Albemarle. My in-laws are now in assisted living. It's a new place, and apparently, everyone is very friendly. The food is really good; I'm hearing that from my really picky mother-in-law. The people are nice. At the last place they were at, they were struggling to get a bath every other day. They had to beg somebody to come and bath them because they were short-staffed. This place is not short-staffed. They have some things, but my in-laws have not been involved yet as they have recently moved and gotten settled in. They have someone that will take care of hair and nails, and they have a library."

"I'm at Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation now and it is quite nice. This is my third time being in here for rehab. They have a large group of occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech therapists. They have anything that you can imagine. They have nurses and doctors on staff and I've been very satisfied every time I was here. It's designed beautifully. The rooms are big. There's only one person in a room, and it's like a hotel room. It's very, very nice. The people are nice. I can't say enough nice things about it. Their physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are wonderful. The staff is great. The food could show some improvement in what they serve and how it's prepared. The buildings are beautiful. They have arts and crafts and stuff like that, but they don't have dances or stuff like that. Each room has a bathroom. If you need something, you hit the call button for them and they come quickly."

"My mother was in Edenton House, but now she's back in the hospital again. She's got a room there. We chose this place because of location, what we needed in terms of accommodations, and their willingness to work with us. She was still in the process of assessment, so she didn't get to do therapy. They've been very accommodating while we've been there. The administrative staff have been very helpful to us getting her settled. My mom doesn't like the food. Everything that I've seen has been very clean and very organized. The patients all looked clean and not messy."

"My husband was in a skilled-care unit. It was a nice place. It was a good atmosphere. My husband was there for about a month and a half. I loved it. The people were nice. They didn't mind helping you. The atmosphere was pleasant. The facility was nice. Their rooms were kept up nice too. They were clean and nice. It was just a good place to be. They had bingo and all kinds of card games at times and different people coming in to sing. On Sunday, they had church people come in and did devotion."

"I volunteer at Waterbrooke regularly so I'm in the building at varying times and on different days of the week. I have always found the building to be clean and odor-free. More importantly, the residents are clean and well groomed. The staff and the residents interact well with each other which indicates to me that the residents are being well cared for. The Activity department has been very creative in planning activities for the residents; there is something going on every day. The facility is always decorated for the season. The building always looks festive and cheerful. I always have a pleasant experience when I visit and recommend Waterbrooke to any family looking for Assisted Living Care."

"Our tour of Tyrrell House was very nice, but my mother needed to be in a more metropolitan area. I met the executive director, the activities director, sales and marketing, and kitchen staff, and they were all very nice and accommodating, and answered every question that I had. They had studios, shared rooms which were two bedrooms with a shared bathroom, and a bigger room instead of just a little studio. They were all very nice and they had activities posted."

"I went to see the Currituck House for my mom. It's very clean, it's a small location. The staff members there were very nice, they seem to care about the people there. They're upgrading everything so it's nice. They do activities and they have an activity director and they would play bingo, do puzzles, and things like that there. They also had a dining room, everybody has their own TVs in their own rooms, and they have a doctor there on staff, and they also do the cleaning. The size of the room is comfortable to have a big TV, chair or you could even have a couch, then a bathroom, and they have closets and drawers and everything. I remember that some of the people were playing card games or checkers. The outdoor area was nice, they have places for them to sit if they wanted to sit outside, with rocking chairs and things like that. It's well-maintained and everything looks clean and new."

"When you walk in at Roanoke Landing Nursing and Rehabilitation Center it smelled of urine. There were a lot of patients sitting in wheelchairs in the hallways, and they just looked lost. I didn't get the feeling that mother would be any more than a number down the hallway. It was very expensive. The staff was fine and answered all of our questions. The appearance, smell, and price, turned us off. The administrative staff was fine. The people didn't seem to be cared for as much. It's located right beside the hospital."

"I visited this facility multiple times while both my grandmother and great aunt were residents here. They have both passed away now but up until they died they both had been here for some time. Every time I visited there I was impressed with what I saw. I was in their rooms, the hallways, the TV rooms, the dining room and the lobby and never once was I unhappy with what I saw. I liked the idea that they had rooms set up like living rooms that the patients could watch TV in, play cards or just sit on couches and chairs and visit with each other or their guests. We even had several birthday celebrations there, where we a lot of the family came and we had cake and presents. I also liked the fact that they had groups come in to entertain the residents. Sometimes they had line dancing clubs come in and do demonstrations, chorus's came in and sang and of course they had worship services for them on Sunday. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the facility also. There were never any unpleasant odors lingering anywhere but there was never an overwhelming smell of cleaners either. Anyone who has ever spent much time visiting a nursing home knows that there are going to be "urinary accidents" and that it is hard to keep a facility with this many people looking and smelling clean. The nurses always seemed professional yet pleasant. So many of the staff seemed to take time with the residents and treat them in a respectful manner. Because of my job I have been in many nursing homes and I feel that this one was one of the best I have seen. "
