"The Good Shepard Nursing home had areas where I felt like it was more of a hospital feeling, and other area's felt more like a home. The area I was looking to place a family member seemed more like a hospital with no carpeting, which seemed a concern for slippers (seemed it would be easier to slip and fall). The commons area was nice; it had a fish tank and televisions which made it feel more homely, which was a good feeling. The staff seemed really nice and made me feel welcome and made sure all of my questions were answered. I did express some concern about the flooring, and the staff did inform me that they were going to be doing some remodeling and putting carpet in as well. With that information, I did go back for another visit, and the staff was very helpful and good at answering questions again (they even remembered who I was). They put carpet in, so the concern of falling was not an issue anymore, and they did paint the walls so they were no longer white and no longer felt like a hospital. The remodel tied the whole building together and made it feel more like a home, and I am now thinking about putting my grandparents there because staff proved to be interested and seemed very caring in what now feels like a nice, home-like environment. "

"We really liked the Homestead of Mason City's assisted living, but it was so expensive that we don't have that kind of money. They were all very pleasant and had a lot of good things that we would have enjoyed. The person who assisted us was a very nice lady. She still calls me back once in a while. It was a beautiful place to look out the windows, and the people were all friendly, including the workers. Everybody we stopped to talk to who was working was very open to talk to us about what they were working on. It's not really big, but it's just very nice. They are very good at having food available any time you want it. For instance, you could go and have food to heat up in the kitchen if you needed it after supper. They also serve three meals a day, and that was very important to me. It's assisted living only, and they said they give you a necklace with a button on it. If you need something, somebody will be there pretty quickly. It's almost like having a nursing home there with them. That was one of the big things about them. They're very willing to come and help you. The rooms were not big, but bigger than some others we've looked at. They have different sizes, too, and there's room for one or two beds, so you can have a second bed. There were a lot of options. I think they also told me that they can get us a hospital bed if we want one. That sounds kind of expensive, so that impressed me. I wondered how many people had had those beds there because we didn't look in that many rooms to tell what everyone's beds actually were."

"My mother ended up getting Covid and now she's going to have to stay in a nursing home forever. She's now in Heritage Care in Mason City, and she's also been there before. They're great and they do a very good job. The outside is great, but the inside, I can't say. Now with Covid, you can't even get in the door. The outside is all well-kept and well-done. They seem to have a really organized staff. One person answers the phone all the time in one department, so you don't get passed around. The social worker has been really helpful at getting things done like arrange the financing and those type of things. They seem to have adequate parking space. It's a brick-looking building that's neat and tidy and looks well taken care of."

"I have saved a room at Legacy Manor II. Everything is brand new, and my room is the biggest one of the unit, so I have ample storage for my stuff. The staff was very nice, she took me on a long tour of both buildings, and she just went out of her way to make me feel comfortable and at home. There’s an arts and crafts room directly below my apartment, and right next door is the exercise room. I do the machine to strengthen my legs, and having it right next door is really convenient. Right now, I’m in independent living, but the room that I have can be converted to assisted, so it’s a good thing. The dining room was spotless, it’s kept so neat and nice, and it just looked really inviting. "

"I loved Country Meadow Place, we were treated so well, and they answered all our questions. It was very homey and clean, the décor was very pleasing to the eye, and the people greeted us the moment we stepped into the place. The staff was phenomenal and couldn't be nicer. Every resident there said my mom will love it there. Everything was inviting, and I was very comfortable right away to have allowed my mom to reside there. I was very pleased and impressed with the spa room, and it was phenomenal to have a spa day in a swirling spa tub. The cafeteria looked very clean and inviting, and they have a coffee bar, with water and tea readily available."

"My mother-in-law was a resident there for five months. I informed one of the personnel at the front desk that we were going to be on vacation and for which dates. I get a call on our vacation informing me that they would not be able to keep her there and they had scheduled a doctor's appointment without consulting me first. This happened to be the day after my husband was having a prostrate biopsy in the hospital. Then I was informed she would have to be out by that Friday. Her appointment was Wednesday and out by Friday and they were holding a room at their affiliated nursing home. We returned from vacation late Monday, husband had biopsy on Tuesday and then her appointment on Wednesday. The facility cares nothing for what is going on in your life. We were told that as long as she could go to the bathroom herself, they would take care of her even though she was having memory problems. The minute she needed a little more assistance, they wanted her out. The day I picked her up for her doctor's appointment, 3 staff were in the lunch room just having a great time and when I returned her from the doctor, the staff at the desk was on her phone. It seems to me that if the staff did the job they were being paid to do there should be no problem. They did not even give us a chance to talk to my mother-in-law and explain to her that she could not be bothering the staff for nonemergency issues. Kentucky Ridge gave us no options, no second chance, no nothing. DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE HERE BECAUSE THE MINUTE THEY BECOME JUST A LITTLE DIFFICULT, THEY ARE OUT THE DOOR. My husband is legally blind and I have been the only driver in our family for a long time. His sister passed away 2 years ago so my husband and I are her only relatives. My husband could very well have prostrate cancer and we are awaiting the results and you would think Kentucky Ridge could take our circumstances into consideration and give us a little more time to make arrangements to move my mother-in-law but they do not care. "

"There are four separate wings in Nora Springs Care Center. It is very large, very spacious, really nice, and well kept. The grounds are beautiful. The staff was very kind, very accommodating, explaining how everything kind of worked and who did what and where. They offered me something to drink and I had tea, so that was nice. That gave me a chance to visit a little bit longer. The rooms were very nice. They had some doubles, but they're mostly single rooms to give you privacy, and they're very well kept, very clean, and spacious. You don't feel like you're in a cave. I was impressed."

"My husband suffered a stroke and was a resident of St. Johns for 3 months while learning how to care for himself. He had daily therapy in order to learn how to walk and how to live with the use of only one hand. The nursing assistants were kind, patient and helped my husband laugh while helping him. The occupational therapist was helpful in providing aids for my husband to use in order to dress himself and manage with daily tasks. She did however have one shortcoming- she told him what he could not do again. You do not ever tell anyone that they can no longer do anything. A good therapist helps the patient discover their own limitations and helps expand what they can do. The physical therapist was great in helping my husband learn to walk and to gain his sense of balance. This facility is well kept with caring personnal. The food served was well balanced and nutritious. The lack of air conditioning meant for some uncomfortable days but a fan in his room helped. They were kind enough to provide a cot for me so that I could stay with my husband when it was possible. We chose this nursing home over other ones in the area due to their positive reputation in the area and we weren't disappointed. My husband is now home and is doing well, a good example of what good therapy and a loving helpful atmosphere can do. "

"Harrison Bay Senior Living has senior living, assisted living, and memory care. It's brand new, and they had a lot of facilities and activities. The administrator was excellent. The rooms and the dining area were excellent. They had transportation services."

"My father stays at St. Mark's Lutheran Home, and we knew of it for many years as it is in the town that we grew up in. The staff are very helpful. The rooms and the dining room are adequate. They have cards, Bingo, and little trips to other areas. It is a very safe facility. "

"My father only needed to be in Osage Rehab and Health while my mom was in the hospital. Nevertheless, they did a good job of taking care of him and all the patients there. My father was in the single room. They had a lot of things going on there. He seemed to think the food was very good because he didn't complain about it. We ate with him once and the food was fine. The staff members seemed to be very caring. Overall, the place was fine."
