Crystal Bay Senior Apartment Community

My parents lived at Crystal Bay Senior Apartment Community. I was happy with where they were. They were in an independent living situation there, but they had the opportunity to move over to the assisted living side of the complex. Neither one of them made it to that point. They kind of went right from there to needing total nursing care. They were in a two-bedroom apartment, and they were there for about five years. They have an elevator and underground indoor parking, so that was much better for them. They had a lot of community activities. Their facility director, Valerie, was also in charge of the assisted living portion and was always available to help anyone with transitional living. The other thing that I really liked was that they provided hot meals if you wanted to pay a little extra over on the assisted living side. People who lived in the independent living portion of the apartment complex could order dinner and have it delivered to their apartment. They have a nice park-like setting outside for people to go out and walk. It's a really well-kept and very pretty building. They have a gathering place, like a nice big living room, on the first-floor lobby with a grand piano and a fireplace. It's a nice place where people can gather if they don't want to be in their apartment. They also have a community room where they would have community meals occasionally and different activities. My mom was an artist, and she actually held a couple of art classes there throughout the years that they lived there, like scarf painting. They have a lot of things going on there. They could maybe do a few more things than they were doing. They also have a couple of retired pastors that live there, and they would have services once a week right there, so that people who couldn't get out and go to church had a worship service. They had a Catholic one and a Lutheran one, so that was also nice. Everything was clean. There were a couple of public bathrooms. People had washing and drying machines in their own apartments, but they had public ones too in a couple of rooms on each floor. There were a lot of amenities available, and they were always kept very clean. The dinners that they had were very good. It was a little pricey for some folks.

I moved into Crystal Bay Senior Apartments. The residents here are so nice, and we communicate with each other. We go down around 6 o'clock after supper to the living room, and we all talk. There are a lot of activities here that they post for us. We have bingo here, then we go to Potawatomi once a month. Once in a while, they have us go out to a restaurant to eat. They take us out. There's always something to do. Rachel manages the staff; she's strict, but she's nice. There's bingo, there is Canasta, and all kinds of card games. You can take your own games like cards when the dining room is empty; you can always get your own people there to play card games and stuff. I pay twelve hundred dollars a month, and it's worth it because I don't have to pay any utility bills. My water, gas, and light are paid for, so that helps a lot. I like it. Everybody's nice. They have a beauty salon here, and the lady who runs the beauty salon is good. She does ladies' and men's hair.

I didn't like the size of the apartments at Crystal Bay Senior Apartment Community. They were really small. I would get claustrophobic in them. However, I liked the community rooms and the lounge-type areas. It's very well maintained, and there were lots of people gathered playing cards, or games, or whatever. I just couldn't live in a place that small.
