Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Chesapeake

  • According to Kiplinger, Virginia is fairly tax-friendly for seniors, whether they live in an assisted living facility or independently. Seniors can apply for tax relief from property tax, and sales tax is already fairly low at 5.75% for combined state and local tax. Further, the state doesn’t tax Social Security income, and there is a $12,000 deductible for other forms of pension or retirement income. There is no estate or inheritance tax.
  • Although several cities in Virginia are AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities members, including Roanoke and Charlottesville, Chesapeake isn’t one yet. The AARP Network consists of communities worldwide committed to making their cities welcoming for all ages. Chesapeake enjoys some features that contribute to an age-friendly community, including a Comprehensive Plan for 55 and Better.
  • In terms of crime, Chesapeake is a relatively safe place to call home. Violent crime is below the national average, and property crime has steadily decreased since 2010. Chesapeake is a city of liveable neighborhoods, good schools and families, so it is likely to remain safe for seniors.
  • Compared to other states, Virginia ranks 12th for long-term care and 28th in overall U.S. health rankings, according to America’s Health Rankings. The city has accessible, comprehensive health care, and the Chesapeake Regional Healthcare provider network has a specialty department for senior care.
  • Chesapeake residents enjoy proximity to the beach and a temperate climate. They get slightly more rain than the rest of the U.S. but also much less snow and more sunny days on average. Summer months can be uncomfortably warm, but overall, this part of Virginia has a comfortable climate and reasonable air quality.
