Free & Low-Cost Assisted Living Resources in Aventura

There are many nonprofit organizations operating in Aventura that are dedicated to making things a little easier for the city’s seniors. The following list contains some of them, all of which provide their services for free. They include agencies that help assisted living residents concerned about the quality of their care, veterans who need nonmedical support and seniors who require legal advice and representation.

ResourceContactService
Florida Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program(850) 414-2323The Ombudsman Program fights for the rights of seniors in residential care facilities. It educates seniors on their rights and investigates complaints made by them and others about the quality of care. The ombudsman can negotiate resolutions with care providers while keeping the complainant's identity confidential.
Miami-Dade County Volunteer Programs(786) 469-4851 (RSVP)(786) 469-4843 (SCP)Miami-Dade County operates volunteer programs for seniors wanting to help others in the community. They include RSVP, which works with various nonprofits, including hospitals, universities and police departments. The Senior Companion Program (SCP) connects adults aged 55+ with homebound seniors at risk of isolation.
Alliance for Aging, Inc.(800) 963-5337Alliance for Aging is the region's Area Agency on Aging. Its numerous services include legal information, advice and representation in some aspects of civil law and education on health matters common to aging, such as arthritis. There's also a help line for seniors and families concerned about possible elder abuse.
Miami Vet Center(305) 718-3712The Miami Vet Center provides confidential nonmedical services to veterans and their dependents. It's open on weekdays during normal working hours. What to Consider About Assisted Living in Aventura

Aventura assisted living facilities must be licensed. They must provide evidence of financial stability, staff training and compliance with regulations regarding building codes, fire safety and health and safety. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration’s Bureau of Health Facility Regulation issues licenses, which are valid for two years. Licensed facilities are subject to unannounced inspections by the bureau.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Aventura

  • Sperling’s BestPlaces gives Aventura an average cost of living index of 115.9, which is far above the state and national averages. The primary reason for the higher average is the cost of renting or buying a home, which isn’t a concern to most assisted living residents.
  • Seniors moving to Aventura from out of state will find Florida is very tax-friendly. It doesn’t tax older residents’ Social Security income or withdrawals from retirement accounts, and there is no state income tax.
  • Aventura’s elders can easily access high-quality medical care, as Aventura Hospital is well-regarded and centrally located. It’s a 467-bed acute care facility staffed by cardiologists, dermatologists, orthopedic surgeons and cancer specialists, among others. There are also several clinics in the area, and Aventura is located just 25 minutes from the many hospitals in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
  • The city boasts 18 more physicians per 100,000 people than the U.S. average of 210.
  • Aventura’s water quality is slightly below the norm, but not to an unhealthy level, and the quality of the air coming in from the Atlantic is far better than what the typical American breathes. Aventura’s commitment to making the city healthier is illustrated by its success in cleaning up contaminated land as part of the EPA’s Superfund project.
  • Violent crime in Aventura is less than half the U.S. average, which may please seniors worried about how safe the area is. However, property crime is significantly more common. Although this is concerning, seniors should know assisted living facilities typically have strict security measures in place and staff on duty around the clock.
  • Many people move to Florida for the sun, and Aventura doesn’t disappoint because it gets 48 more sunny days annually than the U.S. average of 205. The city’s residents rarely experience winter temperatures below 58 degrees, so icy sidewalks aren’t an issue. Summer temperatures of around 90 degrees and high rainfall generate periods of potentially uncomfortable humidity, but these are often tempered by cool breezes sweeping in from the Atlantic.

Review of Sterling Aventura

Sterling Aventura was very nice. They pretty much have everything. It's a little bit cheaper but I don't like being down there in Miami. It's not the best place to be. I have nothing against them...
