The Best Senior Living Communities in Montevallo, AL

"Danberry is only about five years old. So, everything is up-to-date, all electronics and all security things are brand new. The building is outstanding. The grounds are well kept and lovely. What I was noticing as I was going around was that they are staffed to do the job. In other words, there is a man in-charge of maintenance and he has a crew of people who get things done. They have a leader of the maid service and enough people to do their job. I go run around looking at the place just to see about dining and you can go back three weeks later, the same people are there. It is just organized. It looks to me to be a successful operation and it's hard to be successful. Some of the employees are not all that heavily paid. I use to have a bunch of stores in malls and it drove me nuts to try to keep everything going. So, I watch and I say: "This place was organized" The management that they have seem to be good. If you have a problem and you try to address yourself to it, they seem willing to try to hear what it is and see if there is a way to fix it and that's what it is all about. I've been here for two years and the main thing is the sense of community; the quality of staff and how they perform. If you have been active all your life and busy running stuff, then all of a sudden you are sitting here watching television, you just have to learn to adjust on how to be a senior citizen in a senior retirement home. I think these people seem to have an understanding of that and are earnestly trying to make your life pleasant. We play bridge and poker. We have some boxes built up out back where I have some tomatoes grow and I have some fresh tomatoes yesterday from my tomato plants. This place is aces! "

"I felt it was a nice and clean place. It had a lot of different amenities to offer. The people were very nice. It had a pool. They had two meals a day. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. They had arts, different games, a theater, and people that come in to teach piano. It was a pretty building."

"My boyfriend's father was a resident of Cahaba Ridge Retirement Community. The grounds are beautiful. Everything was decorated for the holiday beautifully. The people there were very friendly. They have a koi pond. They had a library. They had a dining area. They had a movie theater. They had a little mailroom. He didn't have to go off-property to mail letters. They had some outside little areas for the community to have their own garden, which was very nice if they wanted fresh produce. It was very clean, and it felt almost like you were in a fancy mall. The ceilings in the actual rooms were a little low. I was in a one-bedroom and it had a little kitchenette, which was nice. If you wanted to be able to have your own fridge in your own area to cook a little bit, you could. If you didn't want to go to the dining room all the time, and if you wanted to be a little more independent, you could do so. I saw people coming and going. It was easy to get to an area close to Lifetime Fitness Gym and Publix. I mean, almost anything you could think of that you need is within about three miles. The Grandview Hospital is three miles away. So the location was fabulous, too. The staff was extremely nice. When I inquired about what it would cost to live there and if they could show me around, they were gracious about that. They've even called me back a few times to see if we're interested. It's pricey, but the food was fantastic and the living quarters seemed a little small to me."

"We found a great facility in Birmingham; it's Brookdale Place. My father is doing real well. He's in the Clare Bridge Unit and he's doing really great. I helped him set up his room and got him situated. He's done much better and he's in better shape. My father didn't adjust very well during the first week, but I guess you would expect that. He was scared and he was mad. But he has settled down and after about 10 days he started doing really well and they started working with him. The staff was very kind, friendly, and helpful. The place is clean, and my mother feels comfortable going there to see him. However, the only thing that I found while I was up there was the first weekend we put him in, they seem to be short staffed and not exactly organized but that straightened up and there was a shortage of women. So I was a little worried. I've voiced my concerns, and since then I think things have been all right. The staff puts him in a wheelchair and wheels him outside every day which he loves. The view out of the window is beautiful, you can see the birds feeding, and trees, grass and flowers. He was enthralled with the place. He just love it! I couldn't imagine finding any better place to put your father. He gets lonely sometimes, and he was used to having my mother with him all the time. Other than that, I think he's just done amazingly well. "

"Skyline Village at Red Mountain is beautiful; if you're an artsy person this would be the perfect place. The view is absolutely amazing. The rooms were quite small, but they were updated and nice. I got to meet the activities director and I saw the residents making something. They have exercise classes and I also met the exercise person. I saw the menu and the food. I walked around outside and saw a lot of different rooms. They spent a lot of time with me; they were very nice. I saw people doing laundry in the washer and dryers, I met the cleaning people, and some of the kitchen staff. They were having a hotdog cookout on the day of my tour. I also met the person in charge of that. I think I met everybody there and the residents seemed very happy. There's a huge outback that's almost like a garden. You can see for a hundred miles; it's amazing."

"My mother is living in Columbia Cottage. It is nicer than the rest and has a kitchenette with a microwave and fridge in the room. Our overall experience has been good. I am pleased with the staff. They have activities like bingo, wine time, and sometimes painting. They have a hair salon where they do their nails. The food is wonderful and served three times a day. They have 30 or more tables with four chairs to a table and a big dining room table for a family. Everybody seems to be really nice. I do not have any problems. My only complaint is that she has had a couple of falls and nobody notified me. "

"Pleasant Villa was beautiful. It was a great facility, but it was really for seniors looking for independent living. It was very nice, but it was not a great fit for my dad. I saw the community area where they were watching TV, and the dining are. I believe they provide three meals a day. The staff member was very helpful, he answered all my questions, and the dining staff was very nice."

"My sister and I saw Longleaf Liberty Park's assisted living, although we did not realize at the time that it was assisted living. It was a lovely place in every way, but it just didn't fit our needs because we were not quite at the assisted living stage yet with my sister. The rooms were very nice, and the decor was lovely. You wouldn't feel like you were in a retirement facility. It looked more like a home rather than an institution. It was very colorful and I liked that. The rooms were fine, but then we realized it was assisted living, which kind of upset us a little bit. I didn't think there were as many available activities, and I understand why. If it's assisted living, of course, you might have some of the residents in wheelchairs so they couldn't go on a lot of excursions, perhaps. They had a beauty shop, and I think they even had a little small workout room with maybe some little weights in there if someone wanted to come and do chair aerobics. They certainly had things available for the residents who live there."

"My parents went to Shelby Ridge Nursing Home for their first rehab. The services were great, and they took really good care of them. It's a great facility. The nurses and the doctor were attentive. They got the treatment they needed. When you call them, they respond within 3 minutes, which was pretty good. They both said the food was good. They had a very good rehab program, and they had plenty of activities for their patients to do. They're very helpful, they kept me informed with everything going on, and they called and asked questions if needed. The staff was great. Everything was always clean. I would recommend it."

"My father is in an assisted living place called Bella Wood Senior Living. The room he's in has been freshly painted. It is an older house but he has his own bathroom and shower. Not all the rooms in there have their own bathroom, but his room does. The dining area is clean and freshly mopped every time I go but the carpet needs redone. The staff have been very friendly and helpful. They have a day room with television, puzzles, and games. I've seen them do that. They also have a front porch where the residents would be out rocking and just be outside. It's a lot less expensive than other places and everything is already included."

"My husband was at Cedar Ridge Veterans Facility for six days before he passed. I don't know if anything needs to be improved, but I'm only giving it a 4 rating because it's a very homey country feel, whereas some people might want something a little more up to date. It's not up to date, and it's an older home, but the care was really good. They were efficient and caring. It is wonderful, but it is not sharp and new. Their food seemed to be excellent. I have not tasted their food, but I have been through the place while they were cooking, and it smelled wonderful. About activities, they have a back porch, they have rocking chairs, and they have a chance to go outside, but most of the activities I saw were them sitting and watching TV."

"My father was in Columbiana Health and Rehabilitation, Llc for three weeks. The people were very friendly and looked after the patients well. The staff was efficient and very kind. It was more of a family setting than a nursing home or facility setting. He thought the food was good. They had some outdoor spaces. They had multiple rooms and multiple things going on. It was a nice place to be. It was highly recommended to us for his situation."
