I had a grandparent stay at Southwest Health Center Nursing Home for approximately 8 months before she passed away of natural causes. Upon the many visits I made to this facility, I noticed that the staff kept the common areas and rooms pretty tidy. In addition to this, the staff was always cordial to visitors and as accommodating as they could be with residents without jeopardizing their safety. The nurse who helped my grandma with her walking therapy was particularly kind and gentle. Residents who stay at this facility are allowed to have an account where they can buy items at the nursing home store or pay to get their hair done, if they so choose. Visitors who have family at the facility are also allowed to join their resident family member for meals if they wish. The eating hall is conveniently located right past the main entrance and before the general sitting area.

This is a skilled nursing facility, located about 8 miles from Platteville. They're associated with Platteville Hospital, and that gives them added resources, including the hospital's geriatric psych unit (important, since Southwest doesn't offer memory care on site). The most recent state survey turned up 6 deficiencies, compared to a state average of 8. It's right on the edge of Cuba City--and many of the rooms look out over the rural area. It's an older building, with 84 beds. It's organized into two separate halves, but they're not much alike. One half has spacious rooms, and the other half has smaller, more cluttered rooms. (They charge the same price for both.) The grounds are well-maintained, and the landscaping is nice. The administrator changed in last five years, but there's been little turnover among the staff. They're been pretty consistent. They did have a recent change in activities programming in the last two years; the new director has breathed new life into the program. They're also known for their food. It's excellent.
