I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother was in Avonlea Cottage of Seminole. It's very clean, very neat, and the best place for seniors in Seminole to live in. It's well kept and they take care of the residents. I think they're understaffed sometimes, which is common for a lot of places. They have some issues with medication, but if they could tweak a few of these things, they would have a knock-out place. However, the food is horrible. They need to improve on that. They took her to her doctors' appointments, but there was one time they couldn't take her because there was no one available. We had several issues with things taken from my mother's room. The lady who ran the place seemed to act like she wanted to make things better, but I wasn't sure. It's supposed to be assisted living. They said they had activities, but they had nothing other than bingo.

I visited this facility

I toured Avonlea Cottage, an assisted living, to see how appropriate it would be for my grandmother. I was immediately impressed with the clean, welcoming atmosphere. I was greeted at the door by cheerful staff members who were eager to show me around. The facility itself is small, with a small number of residents. I felt that this was a positive thing, as the staff could get to know the residents on a more personal level and spend more time with them. A tour showed that the facility was well maintained, with comfortable clean rooms. The kitchen area was tidy and sanitary as well. A downside to the size of the building is that it is somewhat cramped for wheelchair access, but it was free of obstacles and had appropriate safety measures in place. I chatted with a few residents, who all seemed well-cared for. They were groomed, dressed well, and seated outside enjoying the weather. I asked them how well they enjoyed living in the facility and they all agreed that it was very nice. They liked that it allowed them to be as independent as they felt they could be, without enforcing rules, like some nursing homes do. Their only complaint, and something that bothered me as well, was that this facility is located right on the highway, surrounded by other business. Therefore it did not have a very peaceful atmosphere. The sound of the traffic was fairly overwhelming. However, it is located close to a number of physicians and other medical care centers. If there were an emergency, the residents can be transported immediately.I talked with the staff and found them to be courteous and caring. Unlike at other facilities, the employees had time to talk with the residents, and treated them more like friends than potential sources of income. The ratio of nurses/aides to residents was appropriate, and all of the nurse's aides were also certified medication aides, meaning that they had more training and were properly skilled in handling emergencies. The activities provided included crafts and games, as well as transportation to social events if the resident so desired. They also provided transport to any appointments. In addition, physicians, beauticians, ministers and others visit regularly to tend to the residents. Except for the location, this facility is very nice. It had a "home-like" feeling to it. The resident rooms that I saw were tidy and personalized, and except for those with necessary medical equipment, were not designed to feel like hospital rooms. Something that would be very important for my grandmother.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

The building itself is well kept and small, so there are not a lot of residents, which gives them more one on one time. The staff is all very welcoming and nice, and for the most part they took good care of the residents. They do crafts with them, and the residents play games. They also have a hair lady come every few weeks. My only complaint is that they do not make sure they are properly groomed. For instance, my grandmothers nails are always really long and we have to cut them ourselves. Other than that they are all really great and I would recomment this facility!
