I like Asbury Solomons. It was too expensive, but the place was beautiful. My mother was there until Medicare said you could no longer stay. They can keep you for a short period of time, but not long-term care unless you're a resident there. My mom was there for rehab. The room was nice. The food was good. They even had a beautiful old-fashioned piano that they would play for the seniors. That place was wonderful. They had a place where you can get your hair done. It's nice. However, it's very expensive for an average person like me. You need to be a senator or a judge or something or get some extra money.

My dad was at Asbury Solomons. The staff was friendly. It was easy to access, yet they had seemingly good security to keep people from walking out. I think the food was adequate. It was kept very well. The best thing about this nursing home is the proximity to my house so I can go visit and check on him. I was very satisfied with our experience.

Caveat emptor. Based on my experience, the care at Asbury is very good. The business practices are not. Asbury markets itself as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). Under the CCRC concept, a resident pays a substantial upfront fee ($151,000 in my mother’s case) and in return is promised access to elevated levels of care when needed. Do not believe that promise. My mother resided at Asbury-Solomons from July 2007 until January 2023. She resided in an independent living apartment until late August 2019 when she suffered a fall. I immediately asked about moving her to the assisted living part of the CCRC and discovered that there was a (previously undisclosed to us) 45-person waiting list. She was moved to the skilled nursing facility (SNF) where she was returned to “baseline” by the end of September 2019 and “d/c from skilled services with max potential achieved” on September 27, 2019. But, because there were no available assisted living units, she remained in the SNF and was charged the SNF rate ($425/day) instead of the assisted living rate ($226/day) until an assisted living unit became available in January 2020. To reiterate, the care staff at Asbury was very good. The managerial leadership is, in my opinion and based on my experience, concerned primarily if not solely with maximizing revenue. My mother passed away on January 13, 2023. With the notable exception of the pastor who had known my mother for many years, no one in Asbury’s management or leadership offered a word of condolences on the passing of a 16-year resident. To add a final insult, Asbury billed for 11 days of “incontinence services” after my mother had passed away. Caveat emptor.

The buy-in fee at Asbury Solomons is based on the size of the apartment and its location. This place is on the water, has more grounds that are very open. You're right on the Patuxent River. You walk right down and you can have great walks. They have a dock there. For the independent living folks, if they have their own boat, they could have it there. The grounds are very well laid out, and they have very clean apartments. But this place also had what they called cabins or cottages. And those are nice. Because our focus is on assisted living, the cottages that they had there would not have been appropriate for my in-laws. They would not have been able to live independently in those cottages because they are designed for independent-living residents. They took us around, we saw their pool area, we saw all of their meeting rooms, multimedia rooms, and their resident rooms where they could meet with people, play cards, and watch TV. We did not see the assisted living side, but they were able to give us a floor plan of what their assisted living room accommodations would look like. They had what they call a great room area, where you'd have the sitting, dining, and kitchenette area all laid out so that you had some pretty good space.

Asbury Solomons offered various kinds of apartment units. They had everything from a studio type to one-bedrooms, and they also had multi-bedrooms and cottages. The facility was very clean-looking. They have an indoor pool and a very nice fitness center. The marketing person that I dealt with has been excellent. She has been responsive every time. If it was a phone call, she was either there or she returned my call the same day. I sent her a couple of emails, and they have been responded to within 24 hours. My wife was with me, and she likes her quite a bit, too. The setting was very nice. It was like walking around a neighborhood. You have the option of walking down to the riverside. The one drawback was there was a fairly hefty entrance fee. When I did a comparison with another facility with a very small entrance fee, I found that this other facility could be more costly than Asbury Solomons. Despite that hefty entrance fee, after five years they were relatively close to one another. We're looking at thousands of dollars here, as opposed to tens of dollars. So, the closeness was an acceptable difference. They offered a range of things. There was one thing that really struck both of us. If you move into an apartment, they give you the option of getting new flooring, a new set of cabinets, and countertops in both the kitchen and the bathroom, as well as carpeting. In some cases, you could have walls removed (particularly if you wanted a more open look). We were both really struck that you could give the apartment a personal touch, as opposed to what was offered.

Asbury Solomons is very nice, and my aunt is very happy there. It's beautiful and spacious. They have a variety of options for rooms. They've got a swimming pool and activities. The care that she's been getting has been very, very excellent. She started in an apartment in independent living, and then she moved into more closer care. She's 90 years old and she's doing very well. I went there last month. It's a beautiful location on the water. They do have a pool and they do water aerobics. They have a shuttle bus. They have a garden and a patio. Some of the apartments have outdoor balconies that overlook the Patuxent River.
