I went to Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. They're excellent, but they're a little pricey. I have a feeling that the occupants are more educated than we are, as a lot of them are professors from Notre Dame who went over there and are retired. So, I don't know if we would fit in. It was extra clean. There were a lot of activities, and it looked like the food menu was very good. The rooms were very good, but they were very pricey. The one that we looked at, you pay a monthly rent, but you have to buy your unit. It was only a two-bedroom. It was the nicest one we had seen. Even though it's probably 20 years old, it's very, very kept up. They had a library and a gym. They had two dining areas: One for breakfast and lunch, and then their main dining area, which was upscale, just like an expensive restaurant. The staff that we met answered all of my questions. She was very open. They looked very well-qualified. They were very good. I like everything about it except it's very expensive.

After 8 months and a recent inappropriate response to a medical situation, my siblings and I have moved our mother to another assisted living facility. While there are a good number of caring individuals at HCV, unfortunately the leadership is lacking and the tone of the facility doesn't feel very friendly, sensitive, competent or welcoming. I personally felt like somewhat of an intruder while there. Continuity of care was left up to the family to coordinate, and it was always a battle to ensure that the orders from our mom's doctor were implemented for her quickly and accurately. We are very disappointed because our mom spent 6 happy years at Andre Place, which is the independent living building. It seems that Dujarie Rehab and long-term care at HCV have good reviews, but assisted living at Shubert is inadequate from our perspective. For our mother and our family, it was not a good fit at all.

The staff have been very welcoming from the very beginning. Now even after my parents have moved in they greet me when I come to visit. The staff is wonderful in communicating updates on my parents. Mom and dad are so happy to not have to cook any more. There are many other activities (daily mass, monthly lunch bunch, weekly happy hour, daily exercise classes) to help the residents become a real community. The rooms have a small footprint (500-550 sq ft) but they are very well maintained. They have a maintenance person who helps the residents get settled after move in (hanging art/photos, TV wall mounting) and fix anything with a work order.

My parents moved to Scheubert Villas from their house and this was a big change for them. I was overjoyed with the staff in all areas who are welcoming and connecting my parents. The dining room staff are so kind and introduced my parents to other people. They do far more than solely serve food, they love on and connect residents telling my parents “this should feel like your home”. Really lovely attitudes all around.

I felt Holy Cross Village was nice and friendly but too spread out for my husband’s physical capabilities. I thought the dining setup was nice, and the staff seems fine, but it was very expensive.

This place is very good to their residents. I am very happy that my soon to be great aunt in law is in good hands in order to keep her safe, happy, and healthy. The staff is very nice to visitors and to their residents. They make sure that you are able to get to where you need to go to see who you want to see. Also, the staff allows their residents to go out into the community with friends and loved ones, and I am glad they do this the way they do. A behind the desk person signs them out so that they know exactly where their resident is at all times to make sure they are safe and in good care. They also make sure that their meals are sufficient to the desires of the residents. They sometimes even have activities for the residents as well. I am very happy that my fiance's great aunt is in good hands.
