Disgusted

1

November 27, 2024

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I want to start off by saying that I am totally disgusted with everything about edwinola. My mom moved into edwinola on January 29th, 2024, Till we moved her belongings out in November 23, 2024. From the time my mom stated living there, she was admitted several times to the hospital and then admitted to rehab for several weeks (my mom was admitted to the hospital and rehab more than she lived at edwinola) My mom was an extremely high risk for falling resident. They eventually placed on her door a yellow "fall risk" sign, which obviously didn't mean anything cause there was times I had to call the front desk to see if someone could check on my mom, since she wasn't answering her cell phone. When they would have someone check on her, she was found on the floor. Many times faced down. My mom was then taken to emergency. My mom has had large bumps on her forehead, her face has been badly bruised and extremely swollen. The doctor at avent hospital told me that the radiologist told him that he was very concerned of my mom having 20 something scans all within the year, which was excessive, especially at my mom's age of 89 years old. My mom also always had cut marks on her arms from her trying to get around on her wheelchair. She eventually got a scooter which was difficult for her to manage. The elevator at edwinola was out of service for along time. The residents and visitors had to wait an extremely long time to get into the elevator with their wheelchairs and walkers. There wasn't even a staff member to assist them, it was very chaotic and the residents were arguing and cursing each other out. The many times that my mom was admitted to the hospital and rehab, no one from edwinola ever called me to ask about how my mom was doing, yet when my mom was placed in hospice in the ending of November, someone from the nursing staff called me to ask about my mom (I guess since they got wind of my mom being in hospice). This place doesn't care about there residents, but, they had no problem collecting my mom's monthly rent money, even though my mom was hardly living there (which is disgusting to me). In reality edwinola was basically an extremely expensive storage room, since my mom was basically admitted to the hospital and to the rehab facility. When we went to remove my mother's belongings from her "room", we found her door unlocked and her balcony door partially open and 3 bottles of water missing from the refrigerator. My mom's closet had less clothes in it than she first moved in with. Someone there at edwinola was really having a good time in my mom's room while she was not there. The nerve of someone being in her room while my mom was being charged. I reported it to the director of edwinola who said "I'll look into it" (yeah right). To whoever is wanting to place a loved one in edwinola please don't, you'll regret it.

I visited this facility

I toured Elevated Estates Edwinola. It looked like it was very clean. The rooms have a little kitchenette with them where they can have a refrigerator for snacks. The hallways seem nice and wide for wheelchairs. They offer physical therapy to help get my mom out of a wheelchair and be able to use just a walker. So, I just think it's going to be a great place. I only met the administrator, who was very helpful and she was going to be able to get mom approved for Medicaid.

My friends have moved into Elevated Estates at The Edwinola. They like it, and we absolutely are in love with the staff member that runs the place. She is absolutely phenomenal. She has gone out of her way to make sure my friends were comfortable. She found a two-bedroom that they could use, and they are really happy there. The father has his room and the son has his room, and they really like it, so it's great. They let them eat dinner there. They absolutely love the food. They love the staff, too. The staff is very kind and caring. They're joking with them, which is really good when you're in that type of environment. Everybody is really nice. As far as the staff, the service and the food, it's phenomenal. It's like the best one we've been in. They only have two elevators in the facility, but the building itself is very clean. The only issue I had with them is that the neighbor has a cat, and I guess there you take care of your own animals. And you could always tell because when the neighbor opens up the door, it smells like cat pee. So that's why I had my friend moved to a different room, and it was great. The building is historical. It has some characteristics, and it's beautiful, and the cleanliness is great. There are people constantly cleaning and taking care of them. You would have never known they were shorthanded. They have something going on every day. They have games, they play bingo, they play cards, and they even let them start social groups. They have like a group that does dominoes or a group that does Scrabble. Their activities will keep you busy. They do Christmas parties. They even have weddings there, and people that get married there; they have to invite the guests. It's awesome. Everybody is included.

I visited this facility

I toured Elevated Estates at the Edwinola. It was very old and dated. It was dirty outside. There was trash between the hedges and the porch, and in all of the rocking chairs on the porch, the armrests were all black and the cushions had mold and mildew on them. I don't even remember what the rooms looked like because she looked at me and said, " I don't think this is a place for you." when I mentioned the trash. The light bulbs were leaning out of the fixtures. It just looked like a dated place that needed a lot of updating.

My sister lives in Elevated Estates at The Edwinola. It seems very clean. She's just kind of unhappy with the food that they serve. She has a small room. It has a nice little balcony off of it. She has a view of the nice part of the city. They've been very accommodating. They have games and a bus but it does not have a lift.

I liked The Edwinola because it's an old and very distinguished building. They renovate the rooms as people exit them. So, they're constantly turning them over and keeping them up. It's a nice-looking complex. There were porches and gathering places in the common areas. There's transportation and I've talked to several of the staff and they seemed calm and dedicated.

I visited this facility

The people at the Edwinola and the staff were nice and knowledgeable. It was old, but that's part of the charm; the building is over 100 years old. Once we got there, they told us that their assisted living is a little bit different, so they would not provide that help. They want her to walk a little bit to be able to get into the wheelchair, so that pretty much stopped the tour for us because we can't say that she's ever going to be able to do that. We saw a room, they're all in the process of remodeling everything like they're putting in new vanities, and they're redoing the flooring. It's definitely by far the cheapest among those we saw. When you walk in there, there were some water leaks in the lobby area that looked like they've been there for a long time. It may not be a leak, it may just be that they needed paint, but they haven't done that so it just did not present well. I didn't have a problem with the staff, they were all nice. They have a huge front porch, it was humongous, and there were a lot of residents sitting out on the front porch there. I saw a model room, which was on the ground floor, but a lot of the rooms have balconies once you're actually in the room. There's an outdoor little area that they're going to remodel to put in a water feature, like a little fountain this summer. So they have some space outside.

I like The Edwinola, but because of the Covid restrictions, I couldn't go inside the building. I love the old classic feeling of this structure. I think I would have enjoyed it there. I was outside the porch. This building is a landmark in Dade City. It's the tallest building in the city, and it was built in the early 1900s. They have a huge wrap-around front porch full of rocking chairs. Everybody out there seemed very friendly and open to talking. I have a French bulldog and she is an ESA, so she goes everywhere with me and they love her. The staff was very warm, courteous and professional.

I love this place !! My mom has been there since March of this year, All the folks there have helped me so much with the transition. I took care of my mother for 5 years, a very stressful 5 years. All the girls are great. Getting meds situated is a little difficult because mom is only assisted living which means she should be responsible for giving her own insulin, but she always forgets. The food is great have have had dinner with her many times so not even sure where someone said food was bad... Tony is a GREAT cook. As far as cleaning rooms if our family is assisted living they really should be keeping up their own rooms to a "point". I go there 1 or 2 a week and do a full cleaning to my expectations. (again she is assisted living) All I have to say is "I love all of you at the Edwinola and please Keep it up" You will always have bumps in the road and not be able to please everyone and it is NOT easy taking care of our family members. We thank you for all that you do !!! People also need to remember this history of the building it may not be a shiny NEW place but it is beautiful inside !! Just like our family they may not always be happy on the outside, but they have a HEART !

My mother was in the Edwinola when it closed. She has returned and is enjoying it throughly. The staff is helpful and the food is great! Since her return she has not complained once of the food, this is HUGE in the assisted living arena. Her room is newly done over, no bugs and the hallways are very clean. The building is now maintained with care and pride. They now offer many more activities and have outings quite often. I'm so happy for her as she is happy too. Staff is always helpful and kind. Check it out I feel you'll be very pleased with all they have done.

My mother currently resides at The Edwinola. Changes have been made since the post I see here. The facility is under new ownership and they have determined to correct all the problems that once were evident. The food has become very good (Mom is an extremely picky eater and she loves it). They have several activities available each day and even take the residents our on excursions. The room have been updated and insect problems resolved. The staff are very helpful and make sure that there is someone around at all times. It's a shame that no one else has posted the improvements here so that others know how much this facility has improved.

My loved one currently lives at the Edwinola and we have been very pleased with the new ownership and management of the facility. Chef Tony is amazing in the kitchen and the staff is always welcoming. It seems to really be like one big family atmosphere now compared to what it was like before. The renovation looks great and it’s comforting to know our grandmother is well cared for in a clean, like new facility.

My father was a resident of this facility under the previous ownership for 3 1/2 years. He loved his time there and was heartbroken when it closed. He recently checked in for two nights of respite care due to my mom's passing. He and I were thrilled with the refurbishments they have made. They staff was very caring and so kind to him. I didn't worry about him at all during his stay. He's ready to move back ASAP!

German roaches everywhere; rooms dirty. I had to clean for my family member every time I visited. Bed Bug infestation while she was there, air conditioner filters were so dirty you couldn't see through them. Family member fell 8 or more times. Residents are left with no staff during shift change. I got her out of there ASAP. My family member lost 40 +/- lbs in about three months because she couldn't eat the food. Huge turn-over of employees while she was there.

Edwinola was dirty right from the very start; it had a heavy urine and feces odor, and the food looked terrible. Some of the people that lived there confirmed that the food was terrible. The staff was not friendly at all. I absolutely would not have any of my family there.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My WWII father resided here for a year. The food and dining area look good, but don't let this fool you. This place is infested with German cockroaches (the roaches were drinking out of dad's sink and toilet.) We sprayed insecticide daily for over a month after having to put dad's infested belongings in a enclosed detachable trailor to kill all the roaches. They lost dad's dentures and were trying to feed him food (like tough fried chicken) without teeth! Dad was at death's door with low potassium blood levels that were incompatible with human life. They did not give me his mail and lost most of it, and I had a stack of overdue bills that I didn't even know that he had. If you care about your loved ones, forget this place.

My mother was at the Edwinola for four months. She rolled out of bed twice because she wasn't properly positioned, choked twice, and also fell off the couch because they forgot to put her to bed. They were short of staff and the place was dirty. The activities were okay. It needs to be renovated and staffed with adequate people, including all the office staff. Every time, you try to talk to the director, she blows you off or she doesn't know the answer to your question.

I have a brother who is "incarcerated" there and is absolutely miserable. The staff are rude to him - recently he asked to go outside and the aide just laughed at him. He said the place is dirty and the food is terrible. I am very worried for my brother and am afraid he will take drastic actions to get away from this place, one way or the other. His son put him in here and just left him. I cannot call and get an update on my brother as his son has purposely left me off an "acceptable" list. I would never recommend this place to anyone!

I think this facility is a model example of what an assisted living facility should be. The facilities are clean and sectioned off into separate quarters for those who are able to function by themselves and for those who need around the clock care. The staff is incredible. They know their residents and cater to their needs. They are always friendly and very helpful to those visiting as well. Edwinola's facilities are standard for an assisted living facility. They have a nice-sized dining room, a large sitting room with a piano and chairs, a salon, and game room. Residents also get to enjoy the park outside of the Edwinola and its huge wraparound porch, complete with rocking chairs because assistants schedule outside time.I worked mostly with the activities director (who is no longer there), and I felt the business had its residents' happiness in mind. It offered many activities, and the residents were very grateful for them. I watched residents enjoy playing the Wii, board games, sing-a-longs, and art projects.

This place used to be the cream of the crop. However, I went to visit a dear friend there a few days ago and was astonished. I actually had a flea jump on me from the floor! Her whole floor was dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months. She was horribly depressed. She talked about how absolutely horrible the food is and will basically only eat the dessert because of this. She said that it is so hard to even HAVE an appetite, because at the table on one side of her, are people drooling down both sides of their mouths, and on the other side is a gentleman with a catheter tied to his leg (uncovered!) and stinking to high heavens. She is absolutely miserable there, but due to finances at this time, cannot afford to leave. I was devastated. She had even fallen in her bathroom where they had removed a door, hadn't yet replaced it, and left the hinge hanging. She wound up with 14 stitches in her head! This has turned into a horrible place!

My family and I toured Edwinola when we were looking for an assisted living facility for my grandfather. The Edwinola was clean, well cared for, and cheerful. All the residents looked happy and everyone we spoke with said they loved it there. The food is excellent and the staff work hard to make sure the residents are happy. There is also a full schedule of activities in which the residents can choose to take part in. The tour guide showed us the different types of rooms they offer and explained how the assisted living program works. They have many levels of assistance based on the needs of the resident. Additionally, they have a locked Alzheimer ward and do offer full skilled nursing when the time comes. My family and I were very impressed with the Edwinola.
