"Our family had dealt with HCI (Hospice of Central Iowa) both in-home care and the actually HCI facility. Our mother of 93 years of age was told by her doctor that he could no longer handle her medical affairs and she was living her last few months with assistance from HCI in-home nurse and aide. The comfort both the nurse and aide provided us with, was absolutely a remarkable experience! They always had smiles on their faces and were so gentle with Mom and it made us feel at ease (since we thought we were the only ones to give mom the love she deserved). The last month of mom's life, we transported her to the HCI Facility, we could not of been more happier with the way the nurses and aides handled mom. They really made us feel comfortable with our stay there. So gentle, compassionate and caring all of the staff was to not only Mom but all of our family. Since losing mom, we look back and could not have asked for a more comforting, caring and loving place for her last days of life. They prepared us and mom for her end of life and made our lives more acceptable for the loss of mom. I would recommend them to any family in our area to assist in any end of life experience. The whole staff are angels on earth!! "

"My husband has an in home nurse that comes once a week, her name is Erin. She is a very compassionate, caring and understanding person. She even calls on Memorial Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day to thank him for his service to our country. She calls to check on him when she knows he hasn't been feeling well and to check on him after he has had surgery. She makes him feel important even with all of his illnesses and disabilities, which keeps him going and adds to his independency. She reiterates over and over that he is not a burden but a very important part of society, of his family and of his country. She is a true asset to our family, a wonderful, caring, compassionate individual and nurse. "

"Our mother was treated with loving care. The staff made sure she was clean and comfortable. From soft clothing to fresh linens, to soft pillows and a hand crocheted coverlet. The nursing staff are angels in disguise, gently walking us through her journey. Caring and compassionate staff made sure we could pray and grieve together. Making available a chapel for prayers and a kitchen to break bread. This beautiful experience will be forever etched in my memory with gratitude."

"Wesley at Home Des Moines provided my mother with physical therapy. They've got a home health aide coming in to do light housekeeping, meal prep, and that sort of thing. The caregivers are doing a fantastic job. I would prefer they set a schedule and stick to it rather than calling each week to set up the day when they're coming. I think a consistent schedule would have been more helpful as far as physical therapy goes."

"Hospices are generally know as caring, comforting, and their nurses going out to homes providing care have the same reputation. Mercy Hospice assigned a visigting nurse to this patient's home. The nurse was to listen to the patient's heart, etc. & general health needs. This nurse never once told the family that the patient's lungs were filling with fluid (a condition that occurs with later rounds of chemotherapy). This patient essentially suffocated, from lungs filled with fluid. The patient was frightened and gasping for breath to the point of not being able to speak for over 14 hours expiring just before 10 PM that night. There are humane ways of dying, but this is not one of them. The nurse made her ONE trip to the house early that morning and just stuck a nose canula for oxygen into the patients open gasping mouth. The family was never given the choice of having the patients lungs cleared by aspiration, which would allow the patient comfort & die many months later by merely slipping into a coma. This way was more cost effective, after all, the patient was going to die anyway! This is NOT the only hospice care facility in this area. There are three other hospice facilities. Mercy Hospice did not provide much mercy. "
