For obvious reasons, nursing homes are often considered a place to avoid. Many folks believe they are a place to die when whatever malady you'd suffering from is slow in nature, rather than fast moving which would lead to sudden or faster death. I lost three grandparents at Locust Grove and each of them spent considerable time there before they died. You'd think that after that much loss in one facility that I'd hate the place but nothing could be farther than the truth. The staff consisted of local residents who quite often knew the people they were assisting long before they became residents. Due to this, the folks who stayed there often felt more at home than if they'd been placed in a facility in another county. The staff there took great pains to ensure residents stayed as active and lived there lives as close as they could to what their normal lives had been. My grandfather was given a rather of beer every evening when he listened to the ball game on the radio and this was something that he'd been doing for many, many years. This may seem like a mere trifle, but tell that to someone who had been self-reliant for most of their life. The facilities at Locust Grove were immaculate, if not fancy and the grounds were always well maintained. I think the grounds looked as good as they did because some of the residents walked them every day to ensure the landscapers were doing their jobs correctly. In this regard, you can see the pride the residents took in a place that had become their home. I hope I never have to spend my last days in a nursing home, but if I do I can only hope that I get placed in one that operates like Locust Grove.
