"I toured Commonwealth Senior Living at The Ballentine. The reception was very informative. The outside looked very clean and nice. From what I saw, it had a warm atmosphere inside. The facility was pretty good. I would recommend it."

"It has been fantastic about everything. I know she plays bingo and I know they have different activities as far as making things craft-wise. I also know that they have different groups come in all the time, like singers and piano players. The chef also involves the residents with cooking. Mom is so happy living in the facility and also, the residents are allowed to have their own pets. "

"Harmony at Harbour View was very, very nice. My sister and I joked about wanting to go there ourselves. They had a lot of things for the residents there. They had excursions, they had a movie room, they had a library and a craft room. They had a happy hour a couple of days a week and things like that. It was just very nice and I thought my mom would like it. The rooms were nice. This is a new place, it's only like seven years old. The rooms were a nice size, even the studios. I like the bathrooms, the bathrooms were nice and big that if she's had to be in a wheelchair, she can manipulate with no problem. I didn't have any food, but the menus looked very good. What's the most interesting with the assisted living was the fact they give her her medicine and she could do rehab or physical therapy there. They have all those facilities there. The staff who gave the tour was very nice, very informative, and she has done some follow-up calls. I like her a lot, she was very, very helpful."

"My mother is in Commonwealth Senior Living at Churchland House. It seemed like they always take care of her. She's gotten better since she's been there. It seems clean and well run. They have stuff to do and there are constantly people up and down the hallways. So far, so good. I noticed that sometimes the food looks really good and sometimes she said it's OK. Her room is not real big, but it's good enough. It seems very clean and very well maintained. She's not doing any activities right now. She's on oxygen, so it's a little difficult. I had noticed people in groups come in and sing, and I see on Sunday, they have a prayer service, they have movies, they have music playing, and they have bingo. I think she played bingo the other day. It seems like a lot going on. I can't complain at all. The management has been very helpful and everyone that works there seems very helpful and they're paying attention to my mom."

"My mom moved into Acclaim at East Beach. It's one of the newer places. It's in the East Beach area, Norfolk. And she has a view of the Marina and the naval base, which is nice. The people who work there are awesome. There's also a restaurant there. People who live there could get on a meal plan and just eat there when they want to, a couple of meals a day. They have so many activities to choose from. There's something for everybody there. What they do provide is a continental breakfast every morning. So my mom goes down for coffee and you can get like fruit and croissants and stuff like that. But the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and you can get on a meal plan, so you don't have to cook. Each room has its own kitchen. But you can make up your mind if you want to do the meal plan or just cook yourself."

"My wife is in Spring Arbor. I liked it better; it’s very suitable. Her accommodations are nice. The memory care unit was just built last year. Everything is new. The fixtures are new, repainted, nice furnishings. It’s not at all dark and dreary. I found the staff very satisfactory. They have activities, and whether she participates or not is of her choosing. I stay for dinner every night for her; I would say the food is satisfactory. "

"Commonwealth Senior Living at Williamsburg is pretty good and things are going pretty well for my sister. It's really clean and we like the size of my sister's unit. It has a larger kitchen than most, a different entryway, and has just been re-carpeted and repainted. We liked the idea of having out meals provided. Most of the people are older than my sister, but she's pretty happy there. They have Bible study, Bingo, Happy Hour, and cakewalks. My sister also works out in wheelchair aerobics. They have a vehicle that can take them to doctors' appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I like the dining area because the independent people eat in a different place from the assisted living residents. The food is good and my sister likes it. They don't serve lunch, but they take them out for lunch every once in a while, and they take them to the grocery stores where they can buy food for their noontime meal. They eat dinner between 4:30 and 6:00. The independent living area is immaculate and very clean."

"I found Chambrel very nice. The girl who helped me was very personable and knowledgeable. I really like the facility, and it was actually one that was on my mom's short list if she moved down here. I looked at the independent living which was like apartments. They were very nice and very spacious. They had bingo, reading groups, movie nights and trips out shopping. I'd like to move there. "

"Commonwealth Senior Living at Gloucester House was very nice. They had a common room where people playd games and socialized. They have like a tea time or a snack time. They serve food, but we did not try any."

"My mother is in Brookdale Virginia Beach. So far, they are doting on them. They try to keep the residents busy. It's very homey and very comfortable, not just their rooms, but the other communal areas. It's really nice. They've got all kinds of games. The food is pretty good because they have a chef, not just a regular kitchen staff. I don't know what they could do to make anything better. If you have a problem, you call the head of nursing, and there's never a time when she doesn't have time to talk to you. She is a busy woman, but she always takes time for anybody who needs her. She's there every day, not at one shift, but all the shifts. She is a fantastic problem solver. Anything that my mother says, "Oh, this is the issue," she will have already known what's going on, would already have addressed the issue, and is 100% honest about whatever it is. I can't say one negative word about any of the staff. I've not sampled the food, but Mom gained weight while she was there, so it must be good. Everything you look at is so nice and so clean. They've got a couple of maintenance people. They've got regular business hours, and it's a locked facility. You've got to press the button to get in and out or ring the doorbell. It might take a couple of seconds after hours, but they want to make everybody happy all the time. They have activities constantly, starting at 11:00 a.m. all the way to 6:00. After 6:00, if they choose not to be in their room, they can watch movies together on a nice TV. They do bingo, they draw, they do karaoke, and they do charades. I feel it is expensive and they're all expensive, but as long as they take care of your person, that's really all that matters."

"The Gardens of Virginia Beach is just down the street. My wife and I toured it and we're very happy and satisfied with it. She and I won't have to travel far to see my dad. The staff was very helpful. They didn't just wait for me to ask questions but I could tell from the conversation that they were looking for questions I might ask. We saw 3 different rooms. One room was big for what we were looking for. The smaller one was too small. But the middle one was just right and cozy. The most alluring feature of this facility is the general accessibility and the atmosphere of the whole place. I would absolutely recommend them to others. "

"We have decided on Edgeworth Park at New Town. The staff was very helpful and the place was very clean and open. It's a relatively small place, and that's why we chose it. All the meals are provided, and they have regular activities like playing games and going on field trips to local places. Their dining room was very nice; it's a bit small, but open. It's just a very nice place and it definitely felt homey. They have a nurse's station and everything like that but it has a cozy feel to it."

"I did a tour of The Waterford at Virginia Beach. It felt too much like a hospital, so much like a nursing home. He wouldn't have been happy with anything feeling like a nursing home. What I liked best about it is the dining area, where they would seat the residents and serve them. It was like being in a little restaurant. I thought that was very nice for the residents. What I liked least about it is, it just didn't feel like a home setting to me. It felt more like being away, in a nursing home. It just didn't feel like home, and my dad wouldn't have enjoyed that. It was clean, and I know that what they offered was more helpful because they offered meals, laundry service, and things of that nature. So, they offered more assistance because it's assisted living, and I get that. But it just didn't feel like a home to me. They do have a courtyard garden where the residents would go out and sit out. I thought that was nice. The staff was okay, they were helpful."
