The New Homestead has independent living, assisted living, and a nursing home. The independent living is in a separate building. They've got four different-sized units. The apartments in the independent living part were above average. The one that the staff got to show me was being renovated. It looked pretty good. Some of them have in-room washers and dryers, others don't. She let me take my dog on the tour. The facility is showing a little bit of wear. It's a little older than the other ones I've been to, but it looked doable for me. The price is very competitive. It's all on one floor. They don't have a second story. They have a nice big function room. They offer one noon meal a day in independent living. They have on-site laundry for the rooms that don't have a washer and dryer in them. They have a one-time pet charge, but they don't charge a monthly fee for pets. The price was really competitive. I'm keeping them at the top of my list right now. Everything else is way too expensive for me. It was a very thorough tour.

My mother was at The New Homestead. We pulled her out because the care was so sub-par. She originally went in there for rehabilitation because she broke her leg and knee. This is where it turned. The doctor ordered a PT. However, the PT personnel that they had on staff there refused to give her any additional PT because they said that she couldn't remember the prior exercises. That was ridiculous because my mother is in PT right now, and she goes twice a week, and she can go from using a walker to walking on her own. They did not follow the doctor's orders. We had copies of the orders, and they refused to give her any additional PT. I think they wanted her to go from rehab to long-term care, so it wasn't in my mom's best interest to stay there, and that's why I came and pulled her out. The room was average. We had to supply several different things, such as the TV. I think the food was fine, though. My mom did participate in activities. They had people come in and do little shows, and they had people come in to do their hair and assist with nails and stuff. Their staff members were average, too. I think their activities director was very good.

The New Homestead facility is nice. I would say the staff is fine. My mother-in-law’s comments about the food have been very good.

This past weekend my mother-in-law visited us. On our weekend schedule were a number of visits to area assisted living facilities as she has stated an interest in moving closer to us, but is in need of assistance. On our list of visits was the New Homestead and Homestead Acres in Guthrie Center, Iowa. One of the nicest things is the fact that it is really more of an apartment with a staff, than it is a nursing home with options. The facility offers partial meal service and on-call staff (they are available and there, but they aren't checking people every 15 minutes, unless it's asked for). The apartments can be completely self-furnished, which is nice for busybodies. There is rehab facilities very close by (it's part of the same complex) and is available for residents. Overall, it was a nice facility that is very close to ideal for what we were looking for. This complex offers assisted living, independent living and nursing home care. We focused on the independent and assisted living site.
