"I was welcomed by the staff even though I had not called ahead to make an appointment. At first glance, it seemed very pleasant and one of the more "un-institutional" looking facilities I have visited. It was very relaxed. A group of younger people were talking with and playing monopoly with some of the senior residents. Some of the residents were just observing a bridge game, some were playing. All seemed to be having fun. Everyone apparently was able to come and go as they wished. The decor features nice bright cheerful colors and the common area was especially pleasant and welcoming. I really liked the staff. They were most eager to talk with me and answered all my questions completely and without even thinking about what they "should or should not" say...I have run into some facilities where this was a problem. The staff seemed very rehearsed at those places. The food looked and tasted wonderful. This facility has many more on-site amenities than I have seen in most, including a chapel. Many of the activities are scheduled, but many more seem to be just spontaneously undertaken by residents who decide they would like to do some crafts or listen to or play music. It's a really lovely atmosphere. When I began looking at facilities, I was convinced that I wanted my own apartment WITH a kitchen so I could do all my own cooking. Now I'm not so certain of that. Holland House is a definite possibility for me. "

"Our apartment in the newer wing is bright and spacious with a great view of the courtyard and pond. From servers to to administrative staff, they are professional, accommodating, and friendly. Food is excellent, and we have a choice of four dining venues, each with its own menu and interesting daily specials. Activities are varied and frequent. Residents are friendly and care about each other. Swimming pool and exercise classes are available and fun and appropriate for several levels of fitness. A new bridge connects independent living with the full range of care on the campus. Spouses with loved ones in memory care or skilled nursing have easy access to them. After living here for 2 1/2 years, I can't imagine being alone in a house again. "

"My tour experience of Porter Hills Village was very nice. The person who did our tour was very nice and showed us everything. It looked like a very nice place. People looked like they were comfortable there. We think it's going to be way more than we can afford, but they encouraged us to fill out an application. We are filling it out and we'll be taking it over to them, but we think that the buy-in for it is just way too much and we wouldn't be able to afford that. We saw one apartment and it seemed nice. The people had just moved on, and so they were in the process of redecorating. It looked spacious. If it isn't already remodeled, when you go there, you get to pick out the stuff that you want in it as far as cabinets, the type of carpeting or flooring that you want, and the paint colors and stuff. So that's kind of nice. The staff who gave the tour was a very nice young lady. We saw the kitchen and the menu for the restaurant, and it seemed very nice. The prices were comparable to a regular dining restaurant. You get an allowance to spend per month on food if you want to eat there. They also do some cleaning and stuff there and other things like that weekly, but I don't know if that's extra or what because we didn't get into that too much. They have patios or decks depending on whether you're on ground level or above. The place we looked at had a cement patio out behind it. It was nice because it overlooked the golf course. It's an older place, but they've remodeled it and it's quite nice. There's a covered parking garage slot, too. The one thing I didn't like about it was the fact that they didn't offer any type of transportation if you didn't have a car. Some of these places have buses and they take you to the store and places like that if you don't drive, and the negative for Porter Hills Village was that they didn't do that. The staff who toured us was very good. She was very informative, very pleasant and knowledgeable. The place was very clean and well-maintained. "

"Touring Holland Home Raybrook Campus was an enjoyable experience of seeing what was available. They presented different options in terms of living arrangements and different types of financial costs associated with that. The place was well done and well kept up and people were hospitable. Given that I taught at a college, this place was located very close to that college so that we could continue to enjoy the activities that are associated with the college. There were common areas. There's this swimming pool, a woodworking shop, an exercise place, and different restaurants."

"Breton Woods of Holland Home was top-notch. The salesperson, Patty, was most incredible. They had all the amenities you need. They had a wood shop, a craft shop, swimming pools, an auditorium, and a dining facility. They had a restaurant in addition to a little bistro type of place where they could get after-meal options. They also had a little store where folks could go down and buy items on sale. It was really neat and very clean. We looked at a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom apartment. They provided a complete remodel before people move in and they remodel it based on the resident's desires. The pricing was very, very reasonable. It's a not-for-profit organization and it's very caring. They have all levels of care providing up to complete nursing home-type care."
