We had my mom ready to go into Cornerstone Assisted Living, but we’d have to put her into memory care there. Having seen other memory cares, it’s probably the best one but that’s a drastic change, and it’s not an environment I would want to put my mother in at this point. It’s a very nice community, and the assisted living was beautiful. We toured the assisted area where they have a dining area, a solarium and activities. It was very nice. My mom would have to be sent down into the lower level, which they lock up unless family comes. It’s a newer community, but the memory care rooms were pretty small, which my mother doesn’t like. They also wouldn’t allow pets, and that was a big deal for her too, and that was probably the last straw for her. From what I understand, it’s normal for any memory care community.

The Glenn Hopkins seems to be a spiritual Catholic community. You could go to mass every day and pray the rosary. There’s a resident priest there and it seems to be a very nice environment. It looks out on a nice area, kind of like a wetland, so it’s got a nice physical area outside with some green space.
All the staff seemed great. The person that I ran into the most and liked was a young woman who worked in the cafeteria. She was a very nice, inspirational person. The guy who was taking care of the activities seemed like a really wonderful guy too. The other thing I liked about the place was they had some little birds, little finches. I thought it was nice to have some animals there.

My mom was a resident of The Glenn of Minnetonka. They had one side assisted, and then the others at the other side of the hall. When you got off you, you felt like people were separated. The staff, as far as the nurses, they were good. They were very attentive and were able to work together to help her. The only thing I didn’t care about was the separation of the Independent and the assisted sides of it, but the rooms were very nice. The thing I liked about them that’s different is the assisted amenities. They had house cleaning, and the house cleaning also came with two loads of wash a week. That was nice, and that was included in the price; that’s different from other places. It’s very new and well-maintained. The only issue I had, that would probably not give it a five-star is the administration, the people down in the office.
The janitors there were so sweet, whenever I needed something done to help with, whether it be the TV or something fixed, they were very generous, always there, and very helpful. The place is clean, it didn’t have any strong smells. If there’s something that needed to be fixed, it was done right away.
They have a nice little common area down on the main level there. It’s not very big. One of the things that they don’t have, that I didn’t like, is they don’t have elderly care. People move in there and they’re hoping to have some kind of help down the road; they don’t have that.
Overall, it was a fairly nice place. It was convenient. I give that rating for staff, because of the administration being included in there. Unless you want to accept that there’s some way we can separate the administration from the rest of them, because the staff overall was great, and the administration was mediocre at best.
The food was fine, my mom always complained about it, but it was fine. Their activities were hit or miss. They didn’t change it up a whole lot while my mom was there; that was always the same. Back to the staff thing, we would do the once-a-year evaluation, and the head nurse in there, I didn’t care for him. I liked the actual nurses that took care of my mom, but the head person that oversees them, would say, "Well, she has dementia, and she doesn’t participate." Well, if you’re the nurse and if she’s got dementia, then it’s going to be a lot harder. I didn’t like their approach with my mom’s situation as far as maybe trying to suggest ways. It was not a real positive experience with a person, and that person is no longer there, by the way.
They’re not as expensive as some of the other places; I would say the pricing is probably right there. That’s probably why they don’t have elderly waivers because they keep their prices low to keep people there. They’re not cheap, but they’re not the highest.

My mom will be moving to Flourish Senior Living. We chose it because the staff was amazing, everybody there was amazing. It was extremely clean, it’s phenomenal, with a great gym, and every bedroom has washers and dryers in it. The kitchen has granite countertops, they have decks, they have a library, they have a full-size weight room and they have movies. Once a week, they set up outside at the back and they’d do movies around the lake area. They have three chefs, there’s a huge kitchen area where everybody eats. There’s also an onsite salon where they can get their hair done. It’s just a beautiful facility and everybody was super nice. I fell in love with it, and I was there for an hour and a half. Everybody on the staff was nice, you could talk to everybody, and they walked me through everything step by step. The facility was brand new and beautiful, it was immaculate. They have full menus from asparagus, to salmon to everything, and they do Mexican and Italian, they make everything.

They had a big lunchroom, a lobby where people hung out, and an exercise room with a few bikes and things. I didn’t see any activity rooms or things to keep people busy. It was a one floor facility, and there weren’t a lot of rooms, maybe 30. They all had a grassy area right outside their windows. It felt kind of homey, if the rooms were just bigger. The manager who took me around was very kind and very nice.

My tour experience at Suite Living of Crystal was great. All of the people that I talked with were extremely informative, very welcoming, very knowledgeable, and helpful. I didn’t eat any of the food, but the cafeteria looked very homey and it looked like a nice little restaurant. You would want to sit and eat dinner with your family there. The staff knew the tenants and the tenants knew the staff. It was a small place, they only have around 30 beds. The room I saw was more for one person to live there, it’s a studio but it looks nice. I could completely see my mom living there. The bathroom was really nice and really large, and even though the word "studio" kind of freaked me out, when I went to see it I was extremely impressed. It looked like you could make it nice, you have to bring in your own medical-grade bed. And the lady said we can bring a big couch, or we could bring a pullout couch, or bring furniture from home as well for when people come and visit and make it feel like it’s your own little space. It didn’t have a full kitchen but it had a nice area for a small microwave and a small refrigerator, but just not have a stovetop or an oven, but there was a ton of cabinet space. So you could still feel like you’re kind of at home, but not actively cooking. There’s a chart on the wall with a list of activities, they had a big table so you can have friends over and eat there. It breaks down to $10,000 a month.

For our family, finding Adagio was the answer to a prayer! Our mom was in the end stages of vascular dementia and under hospice/palliative care when we moved her from a well-known (but insufficient for her needs) top-of-the-line Memory Care facility into the cozy and cosseting Adagio HOME, where she would comfortably spend the final four months of her life. For these four months at Adagio, mom was supported with 24/7 care and supervision, ensuring her safety (as she had shown some tendency towards falling, especially from her bed, at night) and providing complete, assiduously-administered medical care (in close coordination with mom’s hospice team).
At Adagio, our mom was cared for and nurtured and loved and fed and clothed and bathed within the confines of the most charming, cozy and airy rambler home, in safe and lovely Golden Valley. Mom’s bedroom at Adagio was spacious and infinitely inviting, and she was always in close proximity to caregivers and other residents (3 to 4, at that time), who provided company, stimulation, support/assistance during the communal mealtimes, individualized meal prep, and very often and perhaps most importantly, just the safe and COMPANIONABLE QUIET, SERENITY, and SECURITY she cherished.
Adagio welcomed our family to visit, at any and all times, and I savored the innumerable, long and lazy afternoons with my mom, as we sat together in a sunbeam, lingering over meals and watching the seasons change, in the lovely dining room, looking out the huge picture window onto the back patio and gardens, all lovingly attended. During her final days, mom was constantly supervised and wrapped in loving arms; our family could not have conceived of a more loving, attentive, competent, and supportive environment for mom in which to make her final life’s passage.
While recognizing that care needs for our aging loved ones are highly individualized and changeable, I wish to underscore that for OUR family, the move from the high-end Memory Care facility (:lovely for less needy/fragile seniors, but wholly inappropriate/inadequate for us) into her loving Adagio home, was nothing short of life-changing–and SO life-affirming! The previous facility had been unable to provide any consistent oversight of mom or to adequately protect her safety: what we had there was essentially a very nice room in a gorgeous facility and access to meals, but limited care, company, or oversight. To ensure mom’s safety and companionship during the day/night, we had been forced to hire additional 24/7 nursing care, at a staggering added expense. Even with the additional nursing-aide supervision, however, mom had experienced at the first facility nowhere near the loving, attentive support, peaceful comfort, and rich quality of life she found every day at Adagio.
For a senior in need of full, 24/7 memory and/or nursing home care and companionship in a loving and supportive home environment, I can imagine no place more perfectly suited than Adagio. The night we moved our dear mother from her previous facility into her new (and final) Adagio home, I slept the blissful sleep of the saved. And I’m convinced that for her final 4 months on this earth, so did she.
Lovingly submitted,
LL

Comfort Residence St. Louis Park was clean, friendly, and was a nice little community area. They showed us two-bedroom apartments and studios, and they were nice. The two-bedroom seemed to have a nice-sized bathroom. I was able to see their dining area where they had some TV going on, and a sitting area when you first walked in. The elevators were nice and they were repainting a little area.
