What to Consider About Assisted Living in Hialeah

All assisted living facilities in the state of Florida are regulated, licensed and inspected by The Agency for Health Care Administration, Bureau of Health Facility Regulation. Additionally, the Florida State Department of Elder Affairs coordinates programs and services for seniors across the state of Florida, distributing information about long-term care resources through its 11 Area Agencies on Aging.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Hialeah

  • Health care is readily available in Hialeah. There are 228 physicians per 100,000 population (compared to the U.S. average of 210 per 100,000 people). The area is well-served by hospitals. Palmetto General and Mount Sinai Medical Center both offer highly regarded cardiac care for seniors. Hialeah Hospital is one of the largest private hospitals in Florida and has its own Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit and Senior Emergency department. And with the Miami medical network also in close proximity, excellent health care is never far away.
  • The cost of living in Florida is higher than the national average, especially in the more developed urban areas of Miami and Hialeah. However, health costs slightly less here per month than the national average.
  • Florida has no state income tax and no state taxes on Social Security benefits, pensions or other retirement income. It also has no inheritance tax or estate tax. According to the personal finance publisher Kiplinger, this makes it very tax-friendly for resident seniors. It’s worth noting that snowbirds who maintain homes elsewhere need to spend more than 183 days in residence to benefit.
  • Like the entire Miami area, Hialeah enjoys a year-round warm and snow-free climate. On the downside, summers can be hot and humid, though this is mitigated by ocean breezes. Hurricane season, which runs June through November, is an annual source of concern. Considering its sprawling metropolitan nature, Hialeah’s air quality is better than expected, likely due to the coastal geography.
  • Although Hialeah itself is not a member, Miami, Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida are all members of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. This means Hialeah and all of Florida are committed to making life better and easier for their senior residents through policy, infrastructure design and social programs.
