What comes before assisted living?

Independent living comes before assisted living. Unlike assisted living, this level of care doesn’t include help with the activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing and grooming. Instead, it encourages an active lifestyle for older adults, paired with resort-style amenities, chef-prepared meals and an engaging social calendar.

It’s much like an age-restricted apartment complex filled with self-sufficient seniors. For older adults who can remain autonomous and don’t need assistance with ADLs, it can be a wonderful option for enjoying their golden years.

Resort-style amenities

When browsing through independent living communities, you’ll find an array of upscale amenities available. Some options are quite lavish, so be mindful of the level of luxury you’re looking for. These may include heated swimming pools, fitness centers with state-of-the-art equipment and personal trainers, bars, cafes and fully stocked libraries, to name just a few.

For golf enthusiasts, the convenience of having a golf course just minutes from your apartment door offers both leisure and the joy of the game. For those who enjoy fine dining, chef-prepared meals served in a restaurant-style setting offer an enjoyable culinary experience. While amenities vary between communities, they’re readily available for residents to use at their leisure.

Beneficial services

Independent living communities provide a plethora of beneficial services you can use every day; just be mindful that some may feature an add-on fee. Generally, these include transportation to and from the community, medication management and a concierge to guide you through the area surrounding your new home.

You can also rest easy because staff often takes care of cooking, cleaning and laundry, depending on the community you choose. One benefit of moving into independent living is being able to sit back and relax; these services enable you to live as carefree as possible.

Active social calendar

If you want to make the most of your golden years, independent living communities host full schedules of engaging activity options, with many facilities tailoring their offerings around resident interests. These may include arts and crafts, cooking workshops, woodworking, gardening, walking clubs and special interest groups.

Exercise classes and fitness programs help keep you active and moving. Social events such as happy hours and bingo games encourage connections between residents. Whatever your interests, you’ll find a variety of exciting ways to spend your time 7 days a week.
