Several government assistance programs help pay for assisted living. Many states have Medicaid waiver programs that cover assisted living services. Each program has different eligibility requirements, but you may qualify if you have limited assets and income. Medicaid may pay for assisted living services, such as personal care assistance, nursing services and some health care expenses.

You can also explore state and local programs in your area. Many agencies offer financial aid, subsidies and grants to help older adults afford assisted living.

Do other federal programs help pay for assisted living?

Supplemental Security Income provides financial assistance to older and disabled individuals with limited income and resources. While this federal program doesn’t directly pay for assisted living, you can use your benefits for living expenses.

Veterans and their surviving spouses may qualify for the Aid and Attendance Benefit, a part of the Veterans Affairs pension program. It covers assisted living for veterans who need help with daily activities.

Programs through the Older Americans Act may provide financial support for assisted living. The OAA aims to help seniors and disabled individuals with limited monetary resources access the care they need. You may be able to receive benefits for supportive services, transportation and meals.

Who qualifies for government assistance for assisted living?

Each program has specific requirements. If you aren’t sure how to navigate the application process or where to start, you can ask the agency, a health care professional or a social worker for help. Most programs require you to demonstrate financial and medical need.
