You can apply for Social Security when you reach the minimum retirement age of 62. If you can’t work because of a disability, you can apply for Social Security benefits as long as you’re at least 18 years old. Otherwise, a parent or guardian can apply for you. To claim benefits as the spouse or dependent of a deceased worker, you can apply as soon as you have the necessary paperwork, such as an official death certificate.

The Social Security Administration has a secure website where you can apply for benefits. If you prefer to apply in person or on the phone, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment. The toll-free number is available in several languages, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Should you wait to apply for Social Security?

If you can still work and aren’t ready to retire at age 62, you can wait to apply for your Social Security benefits. However, you’ll receive more money each month if you wait until the full retirement age, which is between 62 and 65 for most people. Delaying your application until age 72 maximizes your Social Security payments.

If you become disabled and can’t work, you should start the Social Security application process immediately. It can take a few months until you begin receiving benefit payments.
