"I looked at six facilities and of the ones I looked at, the one I liked the most was Brookdale Lake Ridge. The staff seemed very attentive and knew everybody by name. The studio rooms were very roomy, had nice windows, and seemed to be very bright. They repainted the place and cleaned the carpets before my father-in-law moved in. They had on-site physical therapy and activities throughout the day. There’s a beauty shop and barber shop on the facility. It seemed to be a very nice place. "

"Advent Care is like a house in a neighborhood. It's a nice idea, but it wasn't quite what my aunt needed in terms of the bathroom being accessible. I think it would have been difficult for her to get around the house in a wheelchair. The lady was very helpful. Even when she knew that we weren't going to be able to do private pay, she shared resources with us on how to get financial help to try to get her into a comfortable situation. She even followed up with me later and sent me websites and stuff. It has two rooms, one has two beds, and the other only has one bed. She said her family lives there at the house, and there was a dog, which I know my aunt wouldn't like. She said that when her husband and her child are home, they help. She prepares meals, which is nice. My mom went with me, and she is in her 60s. She does have knee problems, and she had a hard time getting around. There wasn't a railing on the front step. There wasn't a ramp. She had to use the bathroom, and she had a hard time getting up off the toilet because there weren't the handicap bars where they needed to be. I wasn't comfortable with it. It is not well-equipped for someone who can't walk on their own. If they can get up and walk around, it is a nice little house, and meals are made from scratch. They had chairs and stuff outside, but it was a question of how to get them out there. There's no ramp. The lady said that they encourage them to be out and about, and they have TVs in the family room. She was very helpful, even knowing that we weren't going to be able to give them our business. She still continued to offer support, health websites, things like that to help us find a place and offered to even take my aunt temporarily for a lower price if we couldn't find a place for her to live, like if we couldn't get the Medicaid thing settled. She was a very, very nice lady. It was more physical equipment-wise that was questionable. The food looked good, like homemade fresh vegetables, chicken, that kind of thing."

"I toured Home Eldercare. The staff was pretty nice and tried to let us know what to expect there and what service they would provide. However, the only thing is that the living conditions are a little bit different than what we expected. Two people will share one unit, and the bathroom is quite tight. I'm a little concerned about sending my mom there, and that's the only thing, but the staff seemed willing to help."

"We toured Harmony at Chantilly. My wife and I met a nice young lady. She explained the costs in the boardroom and answered our questions. She's very knowledgeable about pets, deposits required, and meal or no meal plan. So, we got a good idea of that, including the activities at the center and how many units there are. Then she took us on a tour of a one-bedroom with a den and a two-bedroom unit, which was very nice. She showed us all the areas from the exercise room to the theater and dining room. So, we saw all four floors of independent living. We were very well-informed when we left, and it is a very nice place. One thing we have to consider seriously is the cost. It is one of the more expensive ones. If you include all in with the meal plan, parking, and cable, you're looking at over $8,100 a month."

"The Crossings at Spring Hill is excellent. It's a very fine and awesome facility. It's very clean, friendly, well-kept, and just the place where I see my mother living. They keep people very active and they incorporate the community that surrounds them. The staff member who showed me around was very friendly, knowledgeable, and excellent."

"We went to Potomac Place Assisted Living and Memory Care. The staff was knowledgeable. It was a lot smaller place than the other one. I met a couple of people. They seemed very friendly, and very outgoing. It's an older facility, but it's in the woods. So whenever you look at any of the windows, there are trees. The room seems very spacious. The suite looked like it was kind of two rooms. The halls are a little bit skinnier, but it's made for older people. It was our second choice. They have happy hour at 3:30. They have bingo. Even though it's watching YouTube videos, it's a passport where people would have to get a little passport that they have to fill out with like these videos of Italy or Pompeii and stuff like that. I didn't see anybody going on day trips, but they do day trips too. When you go into the restaurant or the area at breakfast, they'll have their lunch meal and their dinner meal sitting out underneath little glass containers so you can see what you want, what you're going to order instead of just saying you want this sandwich. What you would eat is underneath that glass dome. So it's like you know exactly what you're going to get when you order it, which I like a lot."

"I've been aware with The Virginian because it's on a route that I travel frequently. I like that it is in a good location. It had some outdoor area around it so that I could walk if I needed to or if I wanted to. I've been looking for some two-bedroom apartment and they have some nice two-bedroom apartment that appeal to me. "

"The Providence Fairfax has excellent facilities. It's very well maintained and very well cared for. The proximity is close to my sister, my nephew, and my nieces. So, we could have a lot of family support for my father. Our move-in experience was very good. People are very welcoming and the residents are also very welcoming and they socialize. It's a good location. There's plenty of parking for the families and things like that. They have an excellent chef. The main thing that my father is doing right now is physical therapy, which he likes, but they also have different outing trips. Sometimes they have activities where people come in and play the piano or do some musical activities. There's movie night and when the weather's nice and you want to sit outside, there is a rooftop. Some amenities are available for whoever wants to participate. The facilities are very clean and very well laid out. My father has a one bedroom so there's enough space. He has a nice size bedroom, a comfortable living room, a kitchen, and elevator access. They also provide laundry service and cleaning services. So, they clean once a week and do laundry once a week. Internet and utilities are provided. It's only ten minutes from the hospital just in case of emergencies. The staff has been very helpful, very friendly, and very supportive. It's like staying in a five-star hotel. The food is excellent. It is very expensive but they provide the services that you need. In the Fairfax, Virginia area, everything there was expensive so that's just what's in the area."

"I toured Hunters Woods at Trails Edge. It was a nice community, and everything was clean. It was well organized. It had everything I would like. The lady was great and did a good job."

"We visited Sunrise of Vienna right after they opened. The community only had a few residents at the time we visited. The facility is absolutely beautiful. It is a five-star, modern, gorgeous hotel. It's really pretty. My mother-in-law prefers an older-style Sunrise or the more homey-style assisted living. However, for me and my husband, if we had been looking for ourselves, it's what we would have picked. They outdid themselves on just being a beautiful facility. They have pretty, nicely laid-out apartments. There are different views and stuff like that. It was just really nice. For the common areas, there were little outdoor patios. The staff was outstanding and very knowledgeable. We did not try the food, but the dining area was upscale and nicely done. However, even though I've been raving about it, there were only a couple of residents, so we didn't get to see the community as it would come together."

"My mother was a resident for over two years at Arden Court and they did an excellent job taking care of her. Staff has been first-rate, very clean facility, wonderful programs, excellent food. One could not ask for better treatment of one's family members. "
