"A couple of weeks ago, a friend of my Grandpa's called and said that she could no longer afford to live at home. Her family lived in New York and couldn't come back to help her in the next couple of weeks. I had known this woman most of my life and she had always been like an extra grandparent. As such, given my schedule and my concern I took a day off and drove up to Watertown, SD to help her. She was looking for a nice place that wasn't "too institutional". I decided to check out Prairie Crossings because my half-sister's grandmother had stayed there a few years ago before she passed. It helped that I knew the nutrition coordinator from both high school and college. She had been a friend of mine before she got married and moved to Minnesota. The first thing I noticed when we did our tour, was that the residents were upbeat. There was no downtrodden atmosphere, it was playful and lively. Second, there was no "old folks" smell. I found it interesting that even my friend's grandma commented on the lack of smell. The couches and sofas in the TV section were covered with Afghans and custom pillows, even a few gigantic quilts. There were T.V's in the rooms, but no one was in the rooms. That showed the level of community that this place had cultivated. Admittedly there weren't a lot of fancy equipment, but the atmosphere was positive. She had picked this place before we even left. I left her a couple of hundred dollars to hire movers when she decided to move and gave my Grandpa a couple of hundred in case she needed a little more. She just moved in last week after all of the paperwork got passed through. I spoke with her and she commented on finding a couple of good friend and extending an invitation to my grandpa. My grandpa has said, "I'll move out when they get my 6 foot box ready." Assuming he can be convinced to move out, I can't think of many places better than Prairie Crossings. "
