When I visited my mother at this facility I immediately noticed the room she was living in seemed a bit rundown. The wall paper was peeling in places and the furniture was quite outdated. My first impression was definitely not a great one because the overwhelming odor in the hallway near her room was quite foul, as well. This facility overlooks the ocean in a world class resort town, so I expected it to be a lovely place for her to spend the last days of her life. After visiting for a few minutes, I met one of the nurses who entered the room to give my mother her medication. This nurse was so kind and gentle with my mom that the peeling wallpaper and bad odor in the hallway didn't seem to matter as much anymore. As I got to know all of the staff in my mother's wing of the facility, I became convinced she was in good hands at this facility. Everyone I encountered was friendly and competent.

Sonogee Estates of Bar Harbor is a lovely facility with a beautiful location on the coast of Maine. The views from the rows of windows is extraordinary, though the actual structure is in need of remodel. I found the staff to be quite close knit, though at times the informality was to the extreme. Staff were warm and friendly to visitors though at times there was a lack of privacy during visits, etc. While the common areas were tidy, I did not find it as clean as other facilities in the region- and the staff's protocol did not include the same expectations as I have witnessed in hospital type settings. I was a bit taken aback by the absence of hand sanitizer readily available.

When my mother received palliative care at Sonogee Estates in Bar Harbor, Maine, I was taken by the empathetic and compassionate staffing. There is an informality among staff and patients that at first was off-putting but as my mother's condition declined, I realized the staff to be quite therapeutic. The site is beautiful and magnificent on the shoreline of the Atlantic. My experience with Sonogee was fairly brief during my mother's final stage of a lengthy illness. With that being said, I was not particularly overwhelmed with the sanitation or hygiene of the facility. Though I do feel that patient care should be prioritized, I did find housekeeping to be a bit off point here. I would like to add that the consideration and engagement with my family following my mother's passing was quite professional, courteous and helpful. I was impressed that they offered twice-weekly animal therapy with the scheduled visits of several therapy dogs. Also, there never seemed to be an absence of life and activity during the days that I happened to visit. Overall, the care and services of Sonogee Estates was above average; they are a fortunate establishment to have such dedicated staff.
