Cities with more seniors typically provide additional resources to satisfy their older citizens, and St. Helena, where the 65+ age group is almost a third of the population, is no exception. More than 20 home care agencies in the city deliver non-medical support to seniors struggling with everyday living tasks, such as housekeeping. They shouldn’t be confused with home health care agencies, which provide home-appropriate medical care. The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey results reveal that the median fee for home care services in St. Helena is $6,435, which is around 5.2% more than the national average — an increase many seniors are prepared to pay to reside in the beautiful Napa Valley.
Below we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the St. Helena area – complete with services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled resources to help seniors and their families to access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

I’m working with Gentiva Personal Care for my husband. He is disabled. They send a person out four hours a week. She takes over for me for that day and she does a really good job. They’ve got really good people. She washes my husband’s clothes. She folds them up and put them away in the drawers. She does all the dishes and vacuums. They take care of the house and the area that I would have to take care of for my husband’s sake. They’re very good at it. One time my caregiver called the office, and they sent somebody else. There was no problem with that. She is always on time, and she never leaves early. She’s working from the moment she gets there to the time she leaves. She is really good. The staff in the office are very efficient. They’ve been very nice and very sweet. However, I had a little bit of trouble scheduling. They don’t want me to not have anybody come. They have to have somebody come one way or the other because they need their money. This had only happened once, and things worked out fine.

My father knew he was dying at that time. Before he actually passed away, he just had a hard time feeling comfortable with anybody. ApexCare put him with four different people trying to find the right match and it just didn’t seem to work. It was more of issue with my father than it was with ApexCare. My father was not receptive to having anybody coming to the house, and even though ApexCare was trying to be flexible and offering a variety of different options for what person would be the right fit for him, he was miserable. He would not accept anybody, but ApexCare were more than accommodating.
When I went back to clean out my father’s house, it was obvious that he had them do a lot of organizing of his papers in his office. That was very helpful. Any cleaning up after his passing was very easy with the way that they had organize all of the personal business items. They did a great job in there.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in St. Helena, CA
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-Term Care Insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living.Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.

Seniors residing at home in St. Helena needn’t feel they have to cope with challenges alone, as many Napa Valley organizations are dedicated to helping older residents. The resources listed here can help with legal problems, home repairs, meal deliveries and exemptions from some property taxes.
The purpose of the Napa/Solano Area Agency of Aging is to provide services for the region's older adults that help them enjoy their later years in greater safety and comfort. It also provides case management services to help seniors plan their long-term care.

Solano-Napa Habitat for Humanity conducts home repairs for free or at little cost for homeowners on low incomes. The program focuses on fixing building code violations, health and safety issues and improving accessibility for approved applicants with mobility problems. The works carried out depend on the results of a home assessment and may include installing grab bars and ramps, replacing the water heater and repairing the roof.
Community Action of Napa Valley is a nonprofit whose services include preparing and delivering freshly-prepared and nutritionally-balanced meals to homebound adults aged 60 and older. It delivers three meals on Mondays and Wednesdays and two on Fridays, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The suggested donation is $4.50 per meal, although seniors unable to pay will not be refused a meal. The volunteer drivers also make wellness checks at the time of delivery.
Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of services can a home care agency in St. Helena provide?
Home care agencies provide non-medical services for seniors who may be too frail to conduct daily living tasks. These include light housekeeping, grocery shopping, transportation for various purposes and preparing meals. The agency’s caregivers can also act as companions to seniors who may otherwise spend the day on their own.
What should I look for in a good home care agency near me in St. Helena?
The first check a senior should make is that the agency they’re considering is licensed by the Home Care Services Bureau. If it isn’t, the prudent thing to do is look for an agency that is, as licensed agencies must comply with high and strictly enforced standards. When contacting an agency, ask lots of questions about its policies and procedures, particularly those linked to staff recruitment, qualifications, experience and training. A good agency should be able to answer these without pause, as they’ll be ingrained into its being. Also, ask around, as there may be friends and acquaintances who have experience with the agency.
How can I find home care agencies near me with availability?
The simplest and quickest way is to visit the Caring.com page for home care in St. Helena. This provides an easy-to-scan list of the agencies operating in the region and star ratings based on reviews. By clicking on each agency’s link, visitors can access specific information, including costs, payment options and availability. They will also be able to read reviews by current and previous clients and their families.
What is a home care plan?
A home care plan is a roadmap for the senior’s care services that includes descriptions of their needs and the services provided to address them. Home care plans are dynamic and typically reviewed every 12 months to ensure they’re suitable for the senior’s current needs. The plan also includes contact details for the senior’s family should the agency need to get in touch urgently.
Who is eligible for the veterans’ home care program?
The veterans’ home care program helps seniors who served in the U.S. military and their spouses age comfortably at home. The program is actually two different services; home care, which is non-medical support for frail seniors, and home health care, which delivers limited medical services to those recovering from illness or surgery. To qualify, the vet must have seen at least 90 days of active duty, with a minimum of one day in a war zone. Vets in St. Helena interested in applying should contact the Veterans Services Department of Napa County.
