READ MOREHealthcare Facility Regulation is a branch of the Department of Community Health responsible for licensing and regulating assisted living facilities throughout Georgia. The division has a wide remit which includes investigating the legal and financial suitability of applicants and continual monitoring of their services after granting a license. It also frequently conducts unannounced inspections and revokes licenses from underperforming facilities.
When trying to decide how to pay for assisted living, one of the first questions that comes up is "How much does it cost?" With the impact of inflation, it's more important than ever to have up-to-date information when making a financial plan for senior living. To help shed light on real senior living prices, Caring.com has compiled proprietary cost data from its network of more than 75,000 senior living providers to provide insight into the average cost of assisted living in Atlanta and 75 other cities in Georgia.
Assisted living costs have seen a rise in recent years due to inflation. In Atlanta, this has resulted in costs increasing by approximately 9.5% from 2022 to 2023 ($3,392 to $3,717). Costs are expected to rise even higher by 2024, to $4,002. Despite these increases, assisted living still remains affordable in Atlanta compared to the U.S. national average ($4,459) and Georgia state median ($3,952). While Savannah sees the same rates as Atlanta, many other cities are more expensive. Costs in Gainesville are nearly 23% higher than in Atlanta, and Athens is over 27% more expensive.
Location | 2022 Cost (Historical) | 2023 Cost (Current) | 2024 Cost (Estimated) |
---|---|---|---|
Atlanta | $3,392 | $3,717 | $4,002 |
U.S. Average | $4,070 | $4,459 | $4,802 |
Georgia | $3,730 | $3,952 | $3,895 |
Gainesville | $3,921 | $4,296 | $4,626 |
Athens | $4,107 | $4,499 | $4,845 |
Savannah | $3,122 | $3,420 | $3,683 |
Despite having higher costs than average for the state, Georgia doesn’t have the highest fees in the region. Less than 80 minutes northeast of the city, in Athens, seniors typically pay $4,184 to their assisted living providers. Gainesville is as expensive, at $3,893, but it’s still more costly than Atlanta. Seniors looking for more affordable care may want to consider relocating to Macon, which has the most affordable fees in the state, at $2,860 per month.
