Jill: "Elizabeth Residence was very nice. It may not be as vibrant or new as the other community, but in terms of convenience, it was a very appealing option for us. They had very comfortable and nice accommodations. The rooms are not as new but it would be a very pleasant option for my mom. The staff was extremely helpful, very comfortable, and pleasant to work with."

CLE Haven - Bayside

Caring Daughter117302750: "They were renovating CLE Haven, so it was nice. They had 12 rooms open. Mom would have had the pick of the rooms, and the facility would have painted and cleaned it according to her specifications, so that was nice. The drawback was that, on the weekend, there was no registered nurse or LPN on duty. Being a smaller place, the aides were the ones in charge of the little exercise activities. The layout was in a square, so that was nice. People could just walk around the square... (read more)

LK111850: "I went to Meadowmere Northshore. If only they had rooms and not just apartments. I liked this facility. The people were very nice, and they had a lot of activities, but my aunt cannot be in an apartment, and she needs more care than what they had available. They had apartments with a kitchen area, and it has a stove, but they keep it unplugged. It looked like a little kitchenette, but it had a working refrigerator, a microwave, and then a living room. They also have studios ... (read more)

Laurel Oaks

Penny567817: "Laurel Oaks is a large facility. Although it was not in the city of Milwaukee, it was not in the rural area either; it was in suburbia and on a side road. So even though it was busy, it wasn’t near the freeway, you couldn’t hear the freeway, and you couldn’t see the freeway. It had 4 wings -- East, West, North, South -- and in the middle was this grassy area and a nice sitting place if you wanted to sit out in the pergola. They had raised gardens to grow plants, they had a n... (read more)

Immy: "Interfaith has provided drivers for Medical treatment. The drivers were all volunteers who were kind, aware, interested and most helpful. They engaged my husband in solid conversation about their activities when they were young, which opened the door to communication. They also have offered in home help, which I have not yet used...but feel that when the time is right I would happily involve them in some hours of care with complete trust. "

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Bayside

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the village of Bayside is the most northeastern community of Milwaukee County. It has a population of around 4,400, and sits just 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee, making it a good option for those who desire the atmosphere of a small community, but still enjoy easy access to the amenities and attractions of a large metropolitan center.

Roughly 21 percent of residents are aged 65 and older, and to accommodate this aging demographic, two assisted living facilities are located in Bayside, itself, with an additional 48 in surrounding communities, including Brown Deer, Glendale and Milwaukee. Assisted living facilities in Bayside, just as in all of Wisconsin, are licensed and certified by the state Department of Health Services.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Bayside

  • The Milwaukee County Transit System has no fixed route to serve the village locally. However, MCTS has Transit Express and Transit Plus programs that can provide eligible seniors with door-to-door transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores or social engagements anywhere within Milwaukee County. Rides to appointments are accompanied by a small charge, while all other rides are free.

  • Residents of Bayside enjoy a four-season climate, and it receives an overall rating of 44 (with 100 being the most comfortable and the U.S. average being 54.1). In summer, temperatures can reach highs of 81 degrees. While the area does get around 44 inches of snow each year, average winter lows are around 15 degrees, which is considerably higher than other Wisconsin municipalities.

  • Though the average cost of living in Wisconsin falls below the national score of 100, the cost of living in Bayside is significantly higher at 127.4. The largest contributing factors to this discrepancy are high housing and transportation costs.

  • Bayside has an array of community resources for seniors, including the Bayside Senior Center, known as the LX Club, an organization provides a place for seniors to gather and engage in cultural, social, charitable and educational activities.

  • While there are Aurora Medical Center locations nearby in Fox Point and Glendale, Bayside has no facilities from which to choose in the event of a medical emergency or illness, with the nearest major hospital, Columbia St. Mary's, located in Milwaukee.

  • Throughout the year, the village hosts a number of community events, including an annual picnic and movie nights in the park, and with the vibrant metropolitan center of Milwaukee located just a short drive away, seniors can enjoy a number of exciting cultural venues, such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, Pabst Theater and the Mitchell Park Conservatory.
