I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into Colorado State Veterans Home, and so far she's getting really good care. They could improve on the pricing for self-pay; it's rather high. The nurses are very pleasant and responsive to patients' needs. We had a care meeting that was very informative. The only thing right now is the financial part, which I'm not happy with. I'm hoping to get that resolved. They have lots of activities, and daily things for the residents. They've been really trying to get my mom to participate. My mom complains about the food. She doesn't have any teeth so she's not happy with the food, but I have seen their menu, and they have several choices. My mother chooses not to go to the dining area, and she has her food in her room. Their cost is $350 a day. The cleanliness is awesome. I've been to a lot of other communities where there's a smell, and there wasn't anything like that there.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I had my father living with me for 8 years before having to place him in a nursing home. My father had advanced Alzheimer's Disease. The nursing staff treated dad very well, and they treated me with respect, compassion and kindness. Because of his propensity to wander, he was in a secured wing of the nursing home. These are not easy cases/patients to deal with. My father was always an affable man prior to his dementia -- for him, the dementia did not change that -- but that isn't the case for others. I think it's important that people understand that. When I was very clear about my expectations about the care with and for my father, that care is exactly what I got. Conversely, when I wasn't clear, I received muddle or conflicting results. My father's care was exemplary.

I am a friend or relative of resident

The girls upon arrival and a couple of higher up nurses will reassure you that your loved one is getting great care but that is not the case. The nurses are impatient with residents and rush to do the bare minimum to care for patients. They were frustrated with my grandfather for not being able to hear them (he's close to deaf) and they didn't like that he took a few days to adjust to bring in a facility over his own home. They would get very mad at him for him having a difficult time adhusting to more people caring for him and their lack of medical attention to his head wound and new scabs on his shin was frightening. The administration was horrible when trying to figure out biling and they were extremely bad at communicating with our family in regards to what they needed for billing. The case manager was cold and rude when we had questions concerning billing. This process is tough on family's and this facility did not appear to care about the family. Be worried about the fake front you will be presented. although the place looks nice, don't be fooled.
