According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the state of California is home to just under 40 million people — 15 percent seniors over age 65, and 650,000 of whom have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Many of these seniors live in specialized memory care facilities, which provide long-term residential care for seniors who can no longer take care of themselves.
The California Department of Health and Human Services publishes guidelines for senior care in all of the state's residential care facilities, including the 18 licensed memory care sites in La Jolla. Seniors living in these facilities, which are sometimes known as residential care facilities for the elderly (RCFEs) by the department, get round the clock supervision, meal preparation and engaging games and tasks to keep their minds as active as possible.
