We saw no communication between medical staff and caregivers, and our mom's medical needs were not met. The caregivers did only what they had to. The medical staff did not notice when our mom had pain, they did not effectively treat bedsores, which worsened, and there was a lack of follow-up with doctors for medications and home health services. The daily flow just moved the residents from a common room to a dining room for meals, and then back. The common area had a TV on but on such a low volume that was difficult to hear. When we saw activities, they consistently were focused on higher-functioning residents while lower functioning residents sat at a table alone without meaningful engagement attempted. They boast 'dementia specialists', but we saw no interaction with residents that helped the resident 'live out their best life' as described to us when we first toured Arden. They told us that "they live in the resident's world", but all they did with our mom was to put her in a chair and leave her until she was moved for the next meal. We pulled our mom out after two months of reporting specific concerns without improvement, and regret not moving her out sooner.

My husband moved into Arden Courts Monroeville a few weeks ago. The people there were nice. All of the caregivers and everybody is nice. They take care of him very well. The room is nice. The whole building could be a little updated or cleaner, but it's satisfactory. It's fine. I think it's an old building. We talked to the other residents. They have activities after lunch, which is very nice. They do different things every day. Some days they do puzzles. They have a big screen TV where they put on all this music for them or yesterday, the one lady read them a story. We had a Valentine's lunch that was very nice. Spouses and aunts got to come, or their daughters, so they had a whole nice Valentine's lunch for us. The food is very good. There's a very nice lady, and she's the cook, and she comes out and she talks to you. She's very nice. She's very good at what she does. They have a barbershop. It's open once a week. Someone comes in and cuts their hair. They have a nice patio outside where you could walk. They have these two big dirt boxes where they're going to plant vegetables in the springtime, and the residents can help plant.

Arden Courts Monroeville was the best memory care facility we've ever toured. The facility was very clean. They have good activities and very caring staff. There's nothing else to really compare to what they're doing. I like the fact that a small group of residents was housed together so that the number of people that had to be interacted with was small. I saw the dining area, and it seemed wonderful. Each little pod, which has 14 people, has its own dining room and kitchen. Snacks are available throughout the day. They're dining with just a small group of residents, not in one big, central dining room. I was actually given the tour by the director of their dining services, and she's been there for like 21 years. She was a wonderful and caring woman. She knew everything about the place, so I was very impressed with that.

Arden Courts was average and unimpressive. The rooms were smaller than we thought they would be. The staff was okay and friendly; I didn't have a problem. They played cards and bingo.

Mom is in Arden Courts of Monroeville. It is absolutely beautiful. The caregivers there really do care about the patients or the residents. It is set up like an actual home. There are four corners to the building. Each corner is considered a home, and there are 10 bedrooms I think. Each one has a living room, dining room, and a kitchen. It has a very homey atmosphere there. It has a front porch and a back porch for every home. The residents there can walk through the facility. They can go outside if they are assisted. There are alarms everywhere, so when you come in and leave the facility, you have to punch in the code. So, it is very safe. It is very clean. They do the laundry for you. They do all the cooking. It is wonderful.

I chose Arden Courts for the location and it was convenient from where my mom and I lived. I was happy with it when I looked at it. It was clean and I talked to the people who were around there and they were good. The rooms were nice and with no smell. The staff was always responsive to my dad. Dad was in a shared room and it was spacious enough with a shared bathroom. I haven’t eaten there but the food wasn’t bad as far as I know. They have an activities coordinator that would plan different activities for them like Bingo and travelling. The neighbor comes and takes him to the activities.

My mother has been there four months so far. The staff seems to be very kind and caring with the residents. The facilities are clean and attractive, and well-structured to help conserve the memory of residents, It is also secure, so residents cannot wander away, and hourly checks are made to assure that residents are safe. Laundry is done weekly - I'm not sure how clothes get laundered and returned, but the closet has unfamiliar clothes in it. Mother's things must fit someone else, and vice versa. She doesn't know the difference, so it's fine with me. She seems reasonably content, given the problems typical of advancing Alzheimer's Disease. I would recommend Arden Courts to any family concerned with safe reliable care for an aging parent.
