Maryland’s assisted living communities are regulated and monitored by The Office of Health Care Quality, a department within the Maryland Health Care Commission. Its work includes inspecting facilities to ensure they operate to the standards required for licensing, to issue and withdraw licenses, to certify facilities entitled to accept Medicare/Medicaid residents and to provide technical support during license applications.

Able-bodied seniors who can attend adult day care centers have the most affordable type of senior care, with costs averaging $2,134 per month. Assisted living follows, with fees of around $4,500. Home and home health care both average $4,576, despite the latter providing basic medical support. Nursing home care is the most expensive type of care, with the typical semiprivate room costing $9,794, while seniors in private rooms pay an additional $548 per month.
