I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
As a paramedic and firefighter/medical first responder, I have responded to all of the assisted living facilities in Midland County and most of those in Clare, Gratiot, and Isabella counties for over 35 years. When it became necessary to find a safe place for my mother to live, I could have chosen any one of the many facilities, but I chose Applewood as THE place for my mother – that was over 5 years ago. I am still as pleased with the care my mother receives as the first day she moved in. The owners AND the staff still provide EXCELLENT care. How do I know? For the few emergency calls they have, I’ve been there at different hours of the day and night; I see first-hand what is happening in this home without any notice. Furthermore we receive updates about my mother’s changes and cooperate with making sure that my mom does not have to go to the hospital for non-emergent issues (unlike many AFC’s in this county). If you are looking for a SAFE, LOVING home (not just a facility) for your loved one, I encourage you to consider Applewood..

I would never recommend Applewood Assisted Living to anyone as long as Lauren runs the place. She is more concerned with her animals than she is with her Residents. If a Resident is "acting up", she has gone as far as to give them Melatonin. At night, she watches the Residents by setting up cameras while she is on the other side of the building. If a Resident gets up too many times during the night, guess what? They get Melatonin too instead of her actually staying up with the Resident. She cannot handle Residents who need memory care. She loses her patience with them and even called a Resident a psycho for behaving the way they were, due to their dementia. There are very little activities for the Residents to participate in. Usually Bingo twice a week, a t.v. set up in the main area, and maybe a musician once a month. Oh yeah, there's a puzzle table set up too. Sounds exciting huh?! So exciting that the Residents have to be to bed by 9 p.m. even. Guess all that t.v. watching tuckered them out! Oh wait! It's because Lauren wants them asleep so she doesn't have to deal with them. Their meals? Hope you don't mind going to bed hungry! The menu never changes. You can expect to have the same thing every Monday. The same thing every Tuesday. The same thing every Wednesday, etc. So if this sounds like something your family member would love to be a part of, Applewood Assisted Living is for them!

I visited this facility
Applewood Assisted Living Facility is a great facility for most elderly or disabled people. Overall, the grounds are well kept and beautifully decorated. However, despite the landscaping being great, there are no pavilions or walking trails for residents to enjoy the outdoors in. In fact, there is very little outdoor space provided at all. A good thing about the facility, though, is the food. There is a pretty good selection of food and it is all pretty well prepared. It is not quite the normal assisted living facility food that you would expect, however it is nothing special either. The rooms are spacious and quite homey. Also, the facility is not as strict as some others, making it seem more like a living community than an assisted living facility. The nurses are also very friendly and skilled. They not only know what they are doing as far as medically, but they are great with keeping patients up to date with medication and being real friends to the residents. Overall, it is a pretty good facility.
