I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

When my mom fell and broke her pelvis and needed to go for physical therapy, I did some research and was excited that Asbury had an available bed. Reviews were good but my experience was not. The communication between team members is awful AND the communication between family and team members is horrible. After being at the facility for 6 weeks I encountered numerous incidents that disturbed me. Doctor didn't know what was going on and only did additional testing when mom was rapidly going downhill, and I requested bloodwork to see what was going on. Mom was not eating or drinking and because of poor communication it was not noticed as a major problem, so her kidneys were beginning to shut down. I requested she be taken to the hospital. After some IVs, she perked back up and is now in a facility where they are working with her and know what they are doing AND have great communication. BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE WITH ASBURY, I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS FACILITY TO ANYONE. I could go on and on about the problems but will just leave my review as is.

I visited this facility

The facility is beautiful. The administrative personnel are great. The care is horrible!! A few CNAs are caring and compassionate, but most are unconcerned, indifferent and unresponsive to patient needs. I would never consider being in Asbury again, nor would I ever recommend it to anyone!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom is in her 4th week of rehab at Asbury, and though no place is perfect, this place is practically perfect in every way. (I will do the best I can with names.) The doctor (Gambino) and physician's assistant (Eickert) are extremely approachable, caring, kind, and competent. The head of Rehab (Steve) is a caring, efficient, and a good listener. The therapists are brought in from a single outside agency (which as an SLP myself, I prefer) If a therapist's personality doesn't mesh with a resident, there are other therapists. The only negative we faced was having all of the therapies at once in the mornings and nothing all afternoon, though activities are offered. The food is "restaurant average" to 5 star amazing with 2 choices for each meal... and they will fix a grilled cheese any time for a picky eater. Asbury also gives one meal per day to a resident's guest which makes the dining hall feel more like a restaurant... and I have never eaten a better Reuben on artisan bread, egg salad on croissant, or clam chowder. ANYWHERE! The nurses are stellar and responsive. The CNA's are mostly on task and available. The rooms are new, clean, PRIVATE, and 1st rate. Kristen, our case manager was always available and accessible. Transportation is provided at no cost to outside appointments. The receptionists are all so warm and engaging, but getting into the various locked wings could be less challenging. Staff have to go out of their way to let you in and out, and they are not always available. By telling the receptionist which hall you are heading to, helps them be more aware to admit you remotely. The Chaplain, Denise, is warm and caring. Blondie, the therapy scheduler, and Sean in the front office are professional and efficient. Giving respect to the staff (as one should) pays dividends!

While the new building is attractive, the level of patient care has suffered. My father has been using a broken wheelchair for over four months, despite repeated requests to address the situation. If I were not able to visit daily to check on him, I would transfer him to another facility.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Waited forever for move into new bldg. Looks like ski resort, very nice inside, but too much money spent on knickknacks and furniture that residents can't use, often too high for them to even see. It has the air of "Don't let this look like a nursing home." More money should have been put into extra, much needed staff. Already structural problems in new bldg coming to light, such as plumbing defects causing major upheaval, sometimes dangerous. Staff not considered when designing their work spaces and that has been problematic. Overall, most staff seem to love the residents and do well, but seeing a lot of double-shifts being worked and morale seems to be dropping. Families of residents should have more contact with admin and more of a voice in getting things straightened out.

My mother stayed one night and i had her taken out. When you visit, to check it out, they show you this spotless, nicely done room. It is a bait and switch scheme. No one comes quick enough when called, room was filthy so I had to clean it. No way! Took her home with me next day.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My dad has been at Asbury Care Center for the last 2.5 years. There are more aids than nurses. There are no animals living there. Someone with a dog visits and brings the dog around. I have been trying for two weeks to get his floor clean. It is dirty with black spots all over where dirt has collected, food under his bed that he's dropped, his faucet drips constantly and the toilet was very loose for a time. They don't come when he rings his bell, I've been there and we've waited and waited and I finally went to the nurses station to get someone. Some of the staff is friendly, but most appear to just be collecting their paycheck. If I could move my dad to another facility, I would.

Can we give a minus rating! My Aunt is in a medicare bed at another facility and gets better care! My Dad will say he's OK and they will scatter and not do anything. They left my Dad in the same pants with blood stains for a week! I have a list of items.

I visited this facility

I visited this facility while assisting a client with her mother's health care needs. The facility is older, but well maintained. I found it to be clean and bright and the staff were very friendly as well. The facility follows an "Eden Approach" to care, meaning there are animals living in the building. I found the birds, dogs, and cats to be a nice addition and felt that they help residents who might have previously had pets to feel more at home. All of the rooms in this facility are private and a good size. There is also a nice dining area and common place. The three stories are divided into different levels of care and upon visiting each one, I found them all to be high quality. One downside to this facility for some is that they do not accept Medicare or Medicaid payment. It is exclusively private pay. In addition, some with higher care needs (a PIC line or tube feeding for instance) could not be cared for in this facility. I would not hesitate to recommend it though, and felt the care offered was top notch.

I visited this facility while working for the Department of Social Services, while assisting clients of mine who were looking to move to a home that would provide them with a greater level of care than living independently. Aldersgate is a gorgeous continuing care community that provides all different levels of care - from independent cottages all the way to a nursing home with an Alzheimer's unit. The independent living side and assisted living area are really pretty, modern, offer a beautiful dining room for meals (or meals can be brought to the room at times of illness or for assisted living residents who aren't able to get to the dining hall regularly), and also has tons of activities. The nursing home is smaller and not quite as modern, but still well kept and it houses a very friendly staff. I also love that the nursing home incorporates an Eden concept of care - meaning that the residents are always surrounded by animals (dogs, cats, and birds live in the nursing home). I think this offers a nice "home like" touch and gives the residents the opportunity for animal companionship that they may be missing from home. I spent the majority of my time in Asbury Care Center (the nursing home part of this facility) and so, I will focus my review on that area. This nursing home is private pay meaning that they do not accept Medicaid payment. They also didn't seem to be able to provide for higher level medical needs (such as a PIC line), which would certainly make this facility inappropriate for some people. For those that it works for though, it's a really nice facility. There are three different floors, each providing a greater level of care than the last (the top floor is the Alzheimer's unit). All three floors always seemed to have many different activities going on for the residents to enjoy. I observed residents enjoying bingo, arts and crafts, and chair type exercise programs. The staff always appeared to be very attentive as well. I observed visitors including family and children's groups being welcomed into the facility by the front desk staff, as well as nurses on the floor. It was nice to see that kind of welcoming environment and I'm sure it helped people to feel more comfortable about placing their loved ones there. I was in this facility on several different occasions and always found both the facility and the residents to be very clean. I was actually extremely surprised to see that, even with the animals in the building, everything was tidy and any odors were minimal and seemed to be quickly addressed. I had the opportunity to contact both nursing staff and social workers at Avante, in efforts to assist my clients. All were very friendly, helpful and seemed to legitimately care about the well being of their residents. If I were to say anything negative about this facility it would only be that there are very high level care needs that this staff isn't able to handle, and everything is handled as private pay so a long term stay could become quite pricey. I would recommend the facility though, despite those two issues, and would consider placing my own loved ones there if the need every arose.
