I visited this facility

Lutheran Hillside Village was the one I liked. They had a dinner-type thing. They had advanced care or recuperating care, too. The people were friendly, and it felt very relaxed. They had a swimming pool, a nice outdoor patio, and a chapel. I thought it was excellent. It's good. The staff were very nice. They invited us for lunch, and it was a very nice lunch. They sat with us and visited. The food was excellent, too. I think we had a salmon meal, and it was a generous portion. It's a nice place. It was very, very clean and spacious. They had a piano that people could play games and all kinds of stuff. They had an option of homes apart from the main building, but you could still go in for meals, and then they had really nice apartments.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mom moved into the Lutheran Hillside Village. The staff members, from the bottom up, have all been very caring for what my mom needs and how she feels about this and that. My mom is comfortable, and she's getting used to it. The rooms are very nice, well-appointed, and well-taken care of. The staff members are all very friendly and helpful. The dining area is clean, and bright, and seems to have plenty of room for people to get around. There are a lot of activities. Within the assisted living facility, my mom finds that they have different groups that meet from time to time. She plays bingo. She goes to Bible studies and movies. They have musicians come in and perform. She very much appreciates the libraries, where she reads about a book a day.

Lutheran Hillside Village is a continuing care facility. It starts with independent living, then they have assisted living, then it goes to memory care. They have a rehab center there. Everything is there. My sister lives there in an independent home. She can go to assisted living if need be or memory care. It's much bigger than the other place, and they offer a lot more. They have a pool, which they didn't have when my sister first moved in about seven years ago or so. It just seemed very clean and very nice. I've eaten there many times because I visited my sister down there. The food is pretty good. It's not anything to write home about, but at least they have food. They have several dining rooms, the main dining room, a smaller cafe for lunch and breakfast if you wanted to just do that, and you can get takeout. During COVID, they delivered everything to everybody's place. They have transportation. Her home is huge. They have what they consider a boat-size garage. You can get two cars plus and she has all kinds of storage. They replace everything when people move in, all the appliances, all the carpeting, it all gets repainted. It's done again because you're buying into it. The staff is super nice. They do everything for you. They keep it immaculate. The grounds are kept. Everything is kept up, and her place is just huge. It's all wheelchair accessible, so the bathrooms are really big. She has two bathrooms and two bedrooms and one of the bedrooms is huge. The other one is good sized, too. She's got king size bed in both of them. She has a little screened-in porch off the back, a living room, a dining room, a big kitchen, and laundry right there for her use. The people seemed super friendly. I know they have exercise, and games, and they take them to golf outings. They have stuff going on all the time. She just hasn't been able to participate. We stayed there because they have rooms for people that are visiting residents there, so that's always been a good experience for us. I know that she got on a really good deal, but they don't offer the same rate as she got in there any more. She said it's pretty expensive now.

Lutheran Hillside Village is one of my top choices. Number one, because of their ability to handle all necessary levels of care. And number two, because of their caring and professionalism. The tour was excellent. The staff was exceptionally knowledgeable about senior care requirements and their ability to match the patient's needs with the type of care required. The facility is excellent. It's exceptionally clean, has a lot of community spaces, and has an excellent dining room atmosphere. I saw their menu, and the menu was very impressive.

My father was at Lutheran Hillside Village for rehab for a month. They call it REACH Short Stay, where he was to receive therapy. The staff very nice and very caring, but there were a few things that were lacking. There were times when I didn't feel that my dad was being attended to as much as he needed. His room was beautiful. His food was pureed. The dining area was beautiful, and there's a lovely fireplace in there. The windows overlook a lovely area that's well landscaped. The tables and chairs were very nice. It was carpeted, very homey, and very nice. They have a walking path that circles the facility because I would see residents walking. The grounds were lovely. The landscaping was beautiful. They were all so nice, but there were just some things that didn't get done. The therapy staff was excellent. The therapy I would give a 5, the rest of them maybe 3 or 4. It's very expensive.

Lutheran Hillside Village is a fantastic facility and is obviously spiritually-based with a Lutheran background. It’s a large facility that has everything from independent living, to assisted living, to memory care, to nursing. My mother moved from independent to memory care, and my stepfather moved from independent to assisted to nursing, and I'm very pleased. I love the continuum of care. The facility and the staff are outstanding. My mother and stepfather have been very happy. In memory care, there are activities every day, and on Fridays, they take a bus trip somewhere. When they were in independent living they took them to a basketball game, they took them to local health club every day if they wanted to go, and they had outings several times. It's a very active community and it's a good value. It's a higher end home, which is why it's more expensive than others, but the care is better.

My mother is in Lutheran Hillside Village. It's very nice. This is a place that has a large range of care levels, and my mother is now in the highest level of care. It seems to me they have competent, professional staff, and very sufficient staff from what I've observed. It's extremely clean and well-maintained. In the particular wing where my mother is, all the rooms are private. That makes it easier on families. The food has been very good, and they have a chef. They publish a newsletter every day with the activities schedule. The building that she's in is brand-new.

Provider Response

Dear D.B., Thank you for your excellent review of Lutheran Hillside Village. Your positive feedback about your mother's care, the cleanliness and the private rooms, and the great food are all part of the care we strive to give each of our residents! We appreciate you noticing all of the details that help make Lutheran Hillside Village a wonderful place to live.

I visited this facility

I visited Lutheran Village. The rooms were very nice and laid out nicely. The staff was pretty good, it's just that they don't tell you everything. They don't tell you that they have a waiting list to get in there, and that the residents get priority for the rooms. You go through the whole process of filling out the paperwork, get denied, and that's frustrating. I liked it, it was clean, and well-decorated.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I choose Lutheran Hillside Village. It is a clean facility. It has a benevolent care arrangement. It has continuum of care from independent living like we have all the way to skilled nursing. They have moving assistants who help arrange furniture and helps in pre-planning on room sizes. They have assistance with the moving expenses too. The food is perfect! It has a restaurant arrangement. They have full meal service breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Lutheran Hillside Village's application process and the options on you can finance getting in there were very appealing to us. For example, you can do it one or 2 ways -- you can try to sell your home and then use the proceeds of your home to purchase your apartment, or you can gift your home to the facility and then the facility will actually give you credit for the amount that it appraises towards the purchase of your apartment. The only difference is if you sell your own home and then purchase, when the resident passes away, the family gets 95% of the value. If you have them sell the home and you gift the home to them, you only get 50% of the value. Mom will be moving in there. The facility is very modern, and they're expanding. They're creating more assisted living quarters because the residency is aging, and they're keeping everything fresh. The appealing thing for us is Mom is able to stay in her apartment for as long as she can and if she needs some sort of assistance like making sure she takes her meds, she can move to the assisted living portion of the facility, and when you no longer can maintain yourself in the assisted living, you go right into nursing care. So it's all in one location, and you get preferential to moving through all the phases because you're a resident. It was just a smooth process for the application, the purchase, and the contract. All that went well, very simple, streamlined, and didn't take us long. We just looked into this a month ago, and now she's ready to move.

My parents ended up at Lutheran Hillside Village. We chose it because of continuum of care, so they will never need to move again. My dad ended up in skilled care and my mom is still in an apartment, and it's all under one roof. The apartment is beautiful and completely renovated before my mom moved in. The food is outstanding. The care is very good for my dad. It's very Christian-centered care. He feels very safe and secure, and it was reasonably priced. They do have long and short-term rehab there, so if my mom needs that, she can rehab right under the same roof. There are daily activities in skilled care, i.e., arts and crafts, movies, bingo, manicures and pedicures, something going at least twice a day to which the residents are invited to keep them engaged and active. On the independent side, they have lots of committees, outings, and daily activities, i.e., music, bus trips to the theater, to sporting events, and to museums.

Wonderful caring place to live. My husband and I stayed for a week with my mother a resident at Lutheran Hillside Village. I walked all over the halls and the different floors. Everything was spotless and brightly lite. Nothing will be perfect but we found this place for seniors far superior to most others.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I have been at Lutheran Hillside Village for four years now. Overall, this is a very good facility, and I am satisfied. Their apartments are excellent. We do have different activities like happy hour every Friday night and many more. They have a bus that takes the residents out. The staff was very good and very nice as well. Their food is very good. I have no problems with regard to their security; it's very good.

I visited this facility

I thought Lutheran Hillside was a very nice and very clean facility. The staff was nice, and the gentleman was very polite, knowledgeable, and professional -- we’re impressed. In the assisted living facility they had a section that was very homey and had like a little workshop and a library, and the way it was laid out was really comfortable. It was secure. They have different rooms where people could do different hobbies, and that was very nice. They have games, they have areas where they could do woodworking and you could do things own your own. It was actually built in to look like a home workshop, and it has gardening areas where people can do different hobbies that they might like. It didn't just have bingo games and the usual things that you see at other facilities. The dining room was very nice, in between classy and homey

I am a past client of this provider

I was with Lutheran Social Services in Peoria, IL. I chose them because they had helpers with cars that can drive because I needed to purchase a wheelchair. I had a problem with them because I needed to get the driving situation settled. I only had one caregiver with them because I like her so much and she was perfect for me.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My father was a resident here in the rehab area and then the long-term skilled nursing area. We felt he received tremendous and compassionate care from everyone on staff. When my sister and I visited the facility before we actually needed it, the first thing I noticed was a resident dog. I know from other experiences, any place that has a resident pet is a welcoming and friendly place, and that proved true here. They also welcomed a visit from a 10-month-old, and many times when we arrived to visit my dad, we found cards and other artwork from local kids. The facility was very clean. The decorations were pretty, there was a lot of light, and the dining room was very nice as well. The food was decent, and the staff worked very hard to find what residents would eat, even offering to pick up something for them if it would get them to eat. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that we did have some difficulty getting follow-up on paperwork we needed. We had to contact the staff several times before we could get documentation for insurance, which was frustrating. I get the feeling they might be overwhelmed in that area. Otherwise, we were very happy with our experience there, and we have Mom on the wait list for the future.

I visited this facility

Upon entering this facility, I first had to travel down a labyrythine hallway where the decor became increasingly dreary and the lighting ever more dingy. At the conclusion of this hallway the residential halls began. Here there was no decor at all. The only thing close to ambiance was a lingering odor of urine and human waste. The lighting was duller yet. After encountering unfriendly and unhelpful staff I began to pity anyone who had to remain in this facility for longer than 5 minutes. Inhabitants were lined up in wheelchairs in the corridors, most sitting there ignored, staring blankly. After a while, the residents were carted off to the dining room and cheerless staff place clothing protectors upon them. The food appeared less than appealing. The meat looked dry and overcooked. There didn't seem to be alternatives offered should a person not enjoy what was being served. Those people who were being fed by staff were largely ignored by the staff members feeding them. Food was shovelled into their mouths and that was about all. Some residents appeared to need assistance but were not being helped. After the meal, those in wheelchairs were pushed back out into the hallway to again sit with little to no human contact.I was told there was an "Activies Department" but did not see any of the residents involved in that during the time I was in the facility. Overall, not a cheerful place to be.
