Carolyn Strimike, N.P. and Margie Latrella, N.P. are cardiac nurse practitioners specializing in the prevention of heart disease and stroke. They have over 40 years of nursing experience in Cardiology between them. The main goal of their work is to counsel, motivate and empower women to adopt healthy lifestyle choices.

It is natural to be scared when diagnosed with a heart problem so the important thing is to be supportive and sometimes that can help boost the spirits of someone with CHF. You may want to check and see if there are any CHF support groups in your area - check your local hospitals. Also CHF is a manageable disease, symptoms can be controlled by taking heart medications as prescribed and also taking an active role in lifestyle changes. People with CHF need to watch their salt and fluid intake and weigh themselves daily - these changes can help your boyfriend feel like he has some control over his disease. Many people live for years with congestive heart failure and can resume many of their previous activities. Boost his spirits by listening to his concerns and being supportive. Also try and take an active role in his lifestyle changes - find out as much as you can about CHF.
