Reviews of Irvine Cottages 14

I am a friend or relative of resident
Being the only child and sole caregiver I felt a huge responsibility to find the best environment possible for my Mother when she could no longer live in her home. Over the course of a year I toured many memory care facilities and residential care homes only to feel discouraged until learning about Irvine Cottages. I was immediately drawn to the philosophy of care and experience offered by founder Dr. Jacqueline Dupont. After meeting Jacque and touring Cottage #14 I finally found a place I felt good about. It was not only a beautiful home that I knew my Mother would feel comfortable in but also offered a variety of activities along with an experienced staff and caregivers.
Finding the right place was just the first step… leaving her home of 56 years, adjusting to new medications, surroundings and routines was the next, but the caring IC staff helped both of us navigate the difficult transition. Aileen S. was especially kind during this time and offered encouragement and reassurance even while battling her own illness. The wonderful caregivers (Gloria, Esmael and Kenny) have shown much patience, compassion and loving care along the way. They manage to bring fun and smiles even when physical limitations and challenging behaviors arise. The home is always bright and clean and all the residents are treated like family (and so am I!)
It’s been over 16 months now and we have celebrated birthdays, shared holiday festivities, enjoyed music, walks to the nearby park and pet visits. Whenever I’m there it feels like my home too. I am so grateful to have found a residence that provides a safe, healthy and respectful environment for my Mother.
Thanks to the caregivers and staff I now have peace of mind and would recommend Irvine Cottages to other families searching for the best for their loved ones too.
What a beautiful review of cottage 14. I appreciate your response so much! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and Aileen thanks you too even from Heaven! Blessing- Jacqueline

I am a friend or relative of resident
My dad was a resident of Cottage 14 in Turtle Rock in Irvine for 7 months. They were some of the best months of his life. The caretakers, Ish and Gloria we're loving and took wonderful care of him. He enjoyed the family dining and kept saying how good his food was. I also appreciated the nurses going over his medications and recommending some medications for dementia which were a good help. The house was always decorated for the seasons and was always warm and inviting. They had activities for him to participate in. My dad was not mobile and Ish was great being able to get him from place to place especially in and out of the car. When he died the whole staff was compassionate and caring. Ish and Gloria came to the funeral home for the viewing. I would recommend this cottage without hesitation, in fact I have done so to anyone needing senior care.
Thank you so much for your amazing review! I love the care at cottage 14 too! Thank you so much for this kind review and I will thank the staff! Best-- Jacque

I am a friend or relative of resident
My mother moved into Irvine Cottages #14 about a year ago and recently passed away. Have spent the last 8 years in assisted living communities, we were not sure about how a board and care would work, and whether it would be compatible with my mom. I know the senior care space well, and I was familiar with how the large brands tried to scare us about board and care earlier. I wish I would have known about Irvine Cottages a long time ago!
There were four residents and three caregivers -- Gloria, Kenny and Ismael. They were likely the kindest, most compassionate caregivers I have met since my mom had her stroke in 2005. Everything they did was a ginger touch, engaging and seemed to make my mom smile. They had a very strong attention to detail for everything -- meds, behavior, eating, activities, and were really my eyes and ears for her care.
My mom was pretty tough to please and she was always happy about the care she received, and how she felt like the genuinely cared for her.
End of life issues are tough for everyone, and Irvine Cottages enables my mom and our whole family to fill her last months with as much dignity that I could expect.
I highly recommend you consider Irvine Cottages. They know what they are doing and the CARE -- something that doesn't always come together in senior care.
Additional Point: What I believe separates Irvine Cottages from other board and cares is the fact that the owner, Jacqueline D., is a gerontologist and sits on the board of many Orange County senior organizations. She really knows what she is doing and has an arsenal of doctors and staff that are very talented. It is a huge difference maker.
Thank you so much for this amazing review! I will personally thank the staff for their hard work and compassion! Thank you again!! Jacqueline

What Sets Irvine Cottages Apart?
There are many choices for a family to consider when looking for assisted living, and especially memory care. Irvine Cottages is a strong supporter of the idea, "Smaller is better." We believe that the intimacy we offer, along with the consistency of staffing in a small environment (no more than six residents maximum), makes Irvine Cottages feel like a familiar place for your loved ones -- just like the home they grew up in. A large or hotel-like facility may overwhelm a person with memory loss and lead to more confusion due to overstimulation. We find older adults with memory loss adapt quickly to the new, loving environment in our Cottages.
In everything we do one question is always on our minds, "How do we make life comfortable, safe and enjoyable for those whose care has been entrusted to us?" Safety, security, appropriate-level cognitive care and a comprehensive activities program all improve the day-to-day lives of our residents. We are the only facility in the State of California to have a comprehensive camera monitoring program in all bedrooms of the facility. Your loved one's safety and your peace of mind are our main concerns.
Currently we have two nurses on staff who visit residents daily. We also have medication technicians, social service directors, maintenance staff, and other professionals who give the best care possible. We have the lowest caregiver staff turnover reported in the area. On average the House Managers have been employed for five years or more. Our caregivers provide compassionate and intelligent care for all.
Boredom in a small board and care can be an issue, but not at the Cottages. We provide: Music Therapy two to three days a week, Art Therapy once a week, daily Karaoke, game time, outings, gardening, massage therapy, and even aromatherapy. Group or individual exercise activities occur at 10:00 am every day, so all of our residents know what to expect.
An older adult with memory loss has a lot to deal with during their transition to a new home, such as experiencing a new environment, meeting new people, or finding the bathroom. Therefore, for the first three days, we offer a "friend," a caregiver assigned to give extra help at night or during the day to ease their settling comfortably into a new environment. The new "friend" will answer questions, provide reassurance, and give additional cues to their new surroundings.
We do our best to group our care for older adults into three levels, from mild memory loss, to moderate, and for those who need a lot of extra care. Every Cottage has programs tailored to meet each population's specific needs and concerns. For example, some Cottages have extra night care, while some have more music therapy. In order to truly know what level of care or which Cottage will be a good fit for your loved one, a tour with one of our Family Service Directors will assist you in making the right choice!
By providing excellent memory care, we decrease your levels of stress and time spent worrying. You will be able to relax because you know your loved ones are in highly-skilled and compassionate hands. You will be able to enjoy quality visits with your family members, rather than doing the myriad of caregiving tasks on your "To Do" list. That's what we're here for - to make your life easier and your caregiving journey smoother from now on!
In October 2015, Dr. Jacqueline Dupont, Gerontologist and Founder of Irvine Cottages, was honored to receive the 2015 Senior Care Hero Humanitarian Award from SeniorServ, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of older adults.
We have 13 total cottages serving these areas in Orange County:
- Irvine Northwood, Turtle Rock and University Park
- Newport Beach Back Bay Neighborhood
