I visited this facility

Went on a tour a while back and I must you need a more personable Marketing representative. When one of the first things said was “so let’s talk about money”. Didn’t have all the answers she should have had. Not sure why I didn’t get a warm and fuzzy feeling. Smile, personality and education should be key. HOWEVER, the apartments and the amenities are just fabulous!

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The visit we had at Luther Crest in Allentown was good. We looked at the independent living and they had a pool and a very nice gym. There's a bistro we ate there and the food was delicious. We met 2 friends that live there and they took us out to dinner in their bistro restaurant. It's a very big place so we would not consider going there. The independent apartments are close to the auditorium and dining hall so there's a 10-minute walk if you're in the extremity of those wings. A 10-minute quick walk is too far with my wife in the wheelchair all the time. The closer that she is to activities, dining rooms, hairdressers, and therapy rooms, the better it is for us because I have to help her get to those places. If she can go right outside the door and find it on her own, it would be much better.

Very poor service. My mother called and asked me to contact the nurses station because she dropped her buzzer to call the nurses and couldn’t reach it. I called and spoke to them and asked the to go help her. An hour and 15 minutes later, my mother called again and asked if I called. They still hadn’t gone to help her. I had to call back a second time. No sense of urgency whatsoever!!!

I am/was a resident of this facility

The patients wait up to an hour here when ringing to use the bathroom. They claim there is not enough help. Take heed

Luther Crest is the place my mother would like to go to, but it’s outrageously expensive. It has independent living, five different levels of assisted living, and hospice. People move in there in their 70s, then move into the cottages. From there, they can move into an apartment for independent living then into assisted living, go through the many levels of assisted living, and wind up at hospice. You can stay there forever. People living in the cottages can have their cars, so thy can go out and live their lives but have the security of knowing that they’re taken care of and their children don’t have to worry about it. It’s very elegant and everything is top notch. The rooms were beautiful and huge and had lots of storage. My mother happens to know about five people who have lived there, so she wants to move in there. Unfortunately, we can’t afford it; my mother would not have spending money left. In an ideal world, she would probably choose to go there. I didn’t see many people around. There was a big lecture hall with people in there, and others were doing exercises in an exercise room, but I didn’t see people gathering and talking. It didn’t seem very warm and welcoming. It’s much nicer than all of the others I've seen put together, but it’s not for my mother. I think it would be perfect for someone who’s very wealthy and going in there at a young age.

Luther Crest was very lovely and had a lot of amenities, but it was way beyond our price. The staff seemed very nice. There were the usual activities, but they also had a swimming pool and a hot tub. It was very lovely but much too expensive. We could have seen an apartment, but we honestly don't want an apartment; we would rather have a little cottage. It was very plush and very upscale.

Provider Response

Thank you, Lou13, for your feedback regarding your recent visit to Luther Crest. Luther Crest is owned and operated by Diakon and we have 9 campuses across PA and MD. Perhaps one of our other locations may be a better fit for your budget and what you are looking for. The Lutheran Home at Topton is less than 30 minutes from Luther Crest and offers cottages with lower priced entry fees. Feel free to contact us at 1-844-Diakon1 for more information about any of our 9 campuses.

I visited this facility

I was very impressed with Luther Crest. It was very attractive and very clean. My daughter and I showed up unannounced, and a very nice gentleman named Matt who was in charge of sales gave us a tour. There was not a cottage available to tour, but the apartments were very nice. We're on the young side of the scale, and that was pretty much the drawback. The average age that we were told was about 80, and we're not quite there yet. They also had a nursing facility, which was very nice and clean, no bad smells. I would give it a very positive review except for the age difference. Matt followed up and called me back, and I did voice that concern with him; he did say that the people living in the cottages were younger group, which I did not see when I was there. We also toured the dining room, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. There was a crafts room, a billiard room, a library, and a nice indoor pool.

Provider Response

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback from your recent tour with Matt at Luther Crest! Since you weren't able to see a cottage the day of your visit, we would love the opportunity to show you one when you are able to return. If you are able to give us a day or two's notice of when you plan on visiting again, we can arrange to show you a resident occupied cottage and to have you stay as our guest for lunch! Since we don't currently have a model cottage to show, we need to pre-arrange a cottage visit with our residents who have offered to show our guests their unit.

Luther Crest is a big place, but it’s pretty good in as far as the size of the bedroom apartment. It’s a long way from one end to the other, and It’s uncomfortably large for me. I’m not big on the buy-in feature. They cranked up a nice lunch and stuff.

Provider Response

Dear Richard83977250: Thank you so much for your recent visit to Luther Crest! Often, when touring a community such as ours, the community may appear to be extremely big as the sales and marketing staff want to ensure you see everything that the community has to offer. We completely understand your concern which is why we have convenient apartments centrally located near the main community center. We are glad you were able to experience lunch provided by our wonderful culinary team. Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience at Luther Crest.

Luther Crest invited us to hear their speaker, have lunch, and see the facility. The food was good. The facility was excellent although they are a little bit expensive. The common rooms were very good and extremely well organized. The only problem I could foresee is that all the new facilities they built involve a lot of walking. Me and my wife don't have the ability to walk very far as I have a bad back and my wife has a broken neck in which she walks with a walker. We are thinking of going back there again as we have a lot of friends who live there.

I went to visit my aunt at this facility and was very impressed with what I saw. The staff is very courteous and the facility is well maintained. I really felt that the facility looked more like a 5 star hotel than a retirement community. The facility was clean and there were activities available to keep residents active and entertained.

Moving into the assisted living facility after my grandfather died was a terrific move for my grandmother. While she had lived in Allentown before and knew no one when she moved in she quickly made friends. There are many planned activities that allow her to remain social and the exercise facilities and pool are a great feature for her. The common areas are very clean and the staff is always friendly. We both enjoy the food at the dining facility. Upon move in, we did have some minor issues with the maintenance staff trying to get approval for replacement of the laminated coutertops with granite. Also, there is no garage parking (without buying a townhouse model), however during inclement weather, she can get assistance removing snow from her car. Overall, moving my grandmother into Luthercrest before it was absolutely necessary was the best thing we could have done. She is still active enough to meet new friends and healthy enough to enjoy many activities. Had we waited until she needed assistance for everyday tasks she most likely would have not been well enough to meet new people and would have been alone most of the time.

I visited this facility

I was impressed when I visited Luther Crest. I was impressed with the intelligence of the people who actually live there. They seemed very happy. They wore their own clothing. They were well dressed and they behave as though they were living in their own luxury apartment building. They seemed very happy to be there. The only thing they were sorry about is they didn't go sooner. I had taken a look at one of their rooms and it's very nice. They had everything there. It's a luxury retirement community. The people there are like living in a gracious hotel with all the amenities and of course they pay for that. Price wise it's very high but you get what you pay for.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My parents, 81 and 86, have lived in this first class facility for two years. They have a beautiful independent living apartment at Luther Crest, but my father has recent experience in the skilled nursing section in this Luther Crest complex. Luther Crest certainly has beautiful and well-maintained facilities, but what really impresses on a consistent basis is the incredibly caring attitude of all staff members. All nursing, cleaning, food service, maintenance, activities, rehab, and administrative personnel treat the residents like valued members of their own family and display a cheerful willingness to help the residents in any way they can. I recommend Luther Crest without reservation.

I was very pleased with the environment. They were very nice and welcoming. The care that this facility would supply my grandmother is top notch. The surrounding area is not bad either. They have activities that are available. Also they make it feel like a home not another doctor office. The staff seemed to be very knowledgeable as well as nice and polite. The amenities and rooms are very species in order to make it once again feel like a home. I like the fact that they offer independent as well as dependent living and care. My grandma needs to be able to get help as well as be able to learn to be independent again. I feel that this facility will give her that opportunity. They have a great staff of physicians and nurses that have the dedication to help their residents. They are very nice to everyone. They will be the best for my grandma.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

As a relative of a resident, I have visited Luther Crest many times and every time the staff is very pleasant and kind. They have recently renovated the dining facilities and lounge, making them even nicer than before. They offer countless services to assist individuals with all levels of care requirements. The 2BR apartments have all the required amenities and are quite spacious.
