Out of the millions of Texas residents, over 380,000 have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia. Dallas County estimates that 12.6 percent of its population of 2.5 million have a cognitive impairment. Seniors aged 65 and older, 10 percent of Dallas County's population, are especially vulnerable to these conditions. To care for these folks, Dallas County has over 1,100 memory care facilities.Â
The State of Texas's Department of Health and Human Services regulates memory care facilities, both those that are part of a larger assisted living community and those that are secure, stand-alone memory care facilities. Requirements for memory care facilities stipulate specialized staff training and certification. These are designated Type B facilities and are home to residents who need overnight supervision and staff assistance to evacuate in an emergency.Â
